Message from Mayor Allen

Greetings,

Welcome to the June edition of our Town newsletter. Summer is here, most kids are out of school for the summer, and tourism season is wide open! Our 2nd Annual Kids Fishing Day will be held on Saturday June 18th at our Belville Riverwalk Park. I hope you will be able to join us.

Speaking of the Park, you may have noticed a few food trucks at the park lately. The Seaview Crab Company will be at the Riverwalk Marketplace on Thursdays through Sundays. They have great local seafood and more. We'll be adding fresh produce vendors to the Riverwalk Marketplace soon.

Lastly, we have two positions open with the Town of Belville - Planner, and Deputy Finance Officer. This is an excellent way to get involved with your Town's future. Please visit our website if you are interested in applying.

I appreciate each of you for taking the time and effort to be part of the growth of Belville. I take great pride in our Town. Our residents and business owners are the foundation of our success and without you, none of this would be possible. Thank you for the honor of leading Belville towards its future.

As always, take care of each other!

Sincerely,

Mike Allen, Mayor

Hurricane Season is Here!

The Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1 to November 30 with the peak season from mid-August to late October.

To get ready for a hurricane:

  • Build an emergency kit.
  • Make a family communications plan.
  • Know you’re the routes you need to leave your home (evacuation routes). Locate your local emergency shelters.
  • Closely watch/listen to the weather reports. Listening every hour as the storm nears.
  • Put fuel in all vehicles and withdraw some cash from the bank. Gas stations and ATMs may be closed after a hurricane.
  • If authorities ask you to leave, do so quickly.
  • If you leave (evacuate), be alert to flooded or washed-out roads. Just a few inches of water can float a car. Think: Turn Around, Don't Drown.
  • Keep a photo I.D. that shows your home address. You will need it when asking police if it is okay for you to re-enter your area or home.
  • Secure your property.
  • Bring inside all outdoor furniture, decorations, garbage cans and anything else that is not tied down.
  • Cover windows with permanent storm shutters or board up windows with 5/8” plywood, cut and ready to install. Tape does not stop windows from breaking.
  • Put in straps or extra clips to securely fasten your roof to the frame structure. This will lower roof damage.
  • Trim trees and shrubs around your home, so they are more wind resistant.
  • Clear clogged rain gutters and downspouts.
  • Reinforce garage doors. If wind enters a garage it can cause dangerous and expensive structural damage.

Know the terms:

  • Hurricane Watch – hurricane conditions (sustained winds greater than 74 mph) are possible. Watches are usually issued 48 hours before the beginning of tropical-storm-force-winds.
  • Hurricane Warning – hurricane conditions (sustained winds greater than 74 mph) are expected. Warnings are usually issued 36 hours before the beginning of tropical-storm-force-winds.
  • Tropical Storm Warning – tropical storm con

CENTERS FOR DISEASE PREVENTION & CONTROL’S (CDC) NEW RECOMMENDATIONS FOR COVID-19 VACCINES

The CDC emphasizes that receiving any vaccine, including the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, is better than being unvaccinated.

Vision 2030 Plan

The Town of Belville is making strides in implementing the Vision 2030 Plan. The Town applied for a Parks & Recreation Trust Fund grant to extend the Riverwalk further north. This will add approximately 2,400 feet (or 0.47 miles) to the existing Riverwalk along the Brunswick River. A public meeting was held on April 18th Thank you to those that stopped by to talk about the project.

The Vision 2030 Plan describes proposed improvements that reflect how the community would like to see the Town grow between now and 2030. This plan calls for some exciting improvements to the Brunswick River area, including: extending the Belville Riverwalk Trail, recreational equipment rentals, food truck parking, a marina, amphitheater, community center, splash pad, and more! The future downtown Belville will include restaurants with outdoor seating overlooking the river, retail, office space, and residential space - all on the river with easy access to the Riverwalk Trail. For additional information on our Vision 2030 Plan, contact Athina Williams, Town Manager, at townmanager@townofbelville.com or 910-371-2456. You may also visit the project website at www.townofbelville.com/vision2030 to learn more.
