George C. Marshall's Dodona Manor
A Patriotic Holiday Times Two
On Sunday, July 4th, community members gathered on the beautiful grounds of Dodona Manor for a special celebration of our nation’s history. This year, we celebrated the landmark signing of the Declaration of Independence while also highlighting another expression of courageous leadership: George Marshall’s tenacious efforts “to save the world twice.”

A crowd of 150 people gathered after the Leesburg parade to hear noted historian David Roll detail Marshall’s role in leading the Allies to victory in World War II and securing post-war peace and stability through European Recovery Plan, commonly known as the Marshall Plan. Visitors also enjoyed free tours of the house’s first floor as well as free ice cream to commemorate the holiday.

Thank you to our guests and generous sponsors for making this event a success! A video recapping the day’s events can be found on our website or our social media channels: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn.
George Marshall and the Next Generation
The Marshall Center stands in the ideal position to forge connections between the past and the present by bringing the historic example of General Marshall to life for modern-day audiences. That’s the primary reason we’ve decided to focus our efforts on creating a leadership conference to build the leadership skills of the next generation.

Five-Star Character: The George C. Marshall Ethical Leadership Conference was created to develop leaders among rising high school seniors. Students will be given the unique opportunity to form their personal approach to leadership by drawing on the life of one of the most influential leaders in American history.

Using examples from Marshall’s long career of service, participants will learn how to apply these enduring lessons in their own lives. The event will begin with a reception on Friday, August 20, 2021, at Dodona Manor, while sessions on Saturday, August 21, 2021, will be held at the nearby National Conference Center in Leesburg.

Know a young leader who would like to apply? Refer them to the application on our website so we can register them for the event by August 9.
Summer Harvest Feeds the Community
Our garden volunteers have been working hard, and they have piles of produce to prove it. The potatoes, onions, garlic, tomatoes, cucumbers, green beans and carrots they’ve harvested since starting this year’s garden in May amount to 220 pounds, almost all of which has been donated to Loudoun Hunger Relief. Thank you, volunteers!
Katherine Marshall Takes Center Stage
Years before she took her turn on the world stage as Mrs. George Marshall, Katherine appeared several times on the English stage as a professional actress. After graduating from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, she left the comforts of home to pursue an acting career in the British Isles. She toured England, Ireland and Scotland with a traveling Shakespearean company, carrying ten Shakespearean roles including Juliet, Portia and Ophelia.

On Saturday, August 7 at 7 p.m., we’re delighted to host Meredith Bean McMath for our third “Grace & Grit” educational program. She will be discussing how Katherine’s work as a professional actor prepared her to become the wife of George Marshall.

Ms. McMath is an award-winning historian, prize-winning playwright and the Managing Director of Run Rabbit Run Productions, Inc. Her history programs have been commissioned by museums including the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History and The Newseum, both of which are in Washington, D.C. She also works in the theater industry as a librettist, assisting with the stage adaptations for the musicals “Once Upon a Christmas Carol” and “A Musical Little Women,” among other works.

Also joining us will be Victoria Sova, an actor, artist and animal rights activist. Victoria graduated from the National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts in Washington, D.C. Past notable roles include Tiresias in Oedipus Rex and Hero in Much Ado About Nothing.

During our program, Meredith will give a brief lecture about Katherine’s work and education as a female actor during the mid-1900s, including dramatic re-enactments of soliloquies from Katherine’s most famous Shakespearean roles by Victoria.

This in-person event is free and open to all. We hope to see you there!

Taking Their Best Shot
The Marshall Center is proud to host the Loudoun Community Press for their Summer Photojournalism Series.

Geared towards high school students, the program will introduce participants to photography basics, how to manage press assignments and other aspects of photojournalism. Local photojournalists from the Loudoun Times-Mirror and Loudon Now will volunteer their time and skills to mentor students.

We are delighted to help facilitate the efforts of our local community organizations to develop and inspire grassroots leadership.
