FALL/WINTER NEWSLETTER | OCTOBER 10, 2022
Letter from Our Executive Director
Happy Fall, Ya’ll! I just wanted to take a moment to thank all of our residents, families and friends for all of their support this past year! We have had some wonderful events and I am thankful for all those who attend and really strive to give Traditions that community feel that we all enjoy so much!
Classic Car Show
Grandparents Day
Fall Crafts
Making Bracelets
Walk to End Alzheimer's
Monthly Birthday Parties
As we continue to move forward with COVID changes and regulations, I’m very appreciative of everyone’s cooperation and diligence in keeping our residents safe. It definitely takes a village and together we have been able to limit the exposure to our building.

The next few months become very festive at our building. We have lots of upcoming events and activities that we hope you will enjoy!

If you have any questions or if there is anything I can assist you with, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.

Happy Holidays!

Executive Director
THANK YOU, RESIDENT AMBASSADORS
Our Ambassadors help new residents get acclimated to Traditions of Columbus after they have moved in. From inviting them to lunch and activities, to showing them the lay of the land, our Resident Ambassadors are amazing! Our Villa Resident Council President is John Malina and our Assisted Living Resident Council President is Marian Walko (pictured). Thank you, Ambassadors!
COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
This is my favorite time of the year! We begin our Holiday decorating and the building has a wonderful aroma of pumpkin spice! We also start turning on all of the fireplaces which makes it very inviting for families coming in for tours.

On October 11th from 4-6pm, we are having a VIP Open House to show off our building. We are offering VIP guest tickets for our current residents to invite friends and family. We will collect those tickets upon admission, and we will have a drawing for a gift card. The more friends and family you invite, the more entries into the drawing you will have. We will have food, wine and music!

We are also having a craft fair during our Oktoberfest Family Night on October 17th from 5-7pm. We will have over 15 vendors, live music and an amazing variety of Oktoberfest food and drinks! We hope to see you there!

UPCOMING FALL ACTIVITIES
Fall in Love with Traditions of Columbus' Activity Department!
We are doing tons of activities in the months of October, November, and December to get us into the Holiday spirit! Below is an overview of some of the Activities we are offering in the upcoming months!

In October, we have our Oktoberfest & Craft Fair for Family Night on October 17th from 5-7pm along with our VIP Open House on October 11th from 4-6pm. We will also have a Trick-or-Treat event for the community on October 28th.

In November, we will have a variety of fall-themed happy hours, crafts and our annual Thanksgiving Meal as well as we will begin decorating for Christmas.

In December, we are getting in the Christmas Spirit with our seasonal wreath making class, a hot chocolate bar, and Christmas cookie decorating. We will have a visit with reindeer again for Family Night as well as taking our residents to see Christmas Lights!

WELLNESS SPOTLIGHT
As wonderful and exciting as the Holiday Season can be, for many of our memory care residents it can be overstimulating and overwhelming.

Often, we have families that visit from out of town and plan lots of outings, dinners and events for our residents. While these things seem very fun to most of us, for residents with memory care issues this can result in our residents becoming anxious or agitated.

A few things to consider when planning gatherings would be to limit the amount of people that will be in attendance, the location, and the time. Often, our residents feel more comfortable in their “home” environment. We are happy to arrange a meeting space here at the building for gatherings. We also recommend scheduling gatherings during the day versus the evening hours when many residents struggle with increased anxiety and confusion during “Sundowning” in the evening hours. Small gatherings tend to also be less overwhelming.

If you have any concerns or would like to discuss best options for family gatherings, please feel free to reach out to me or Brittany Elgar, Director of Wellness, during my maternity leave.

TIPS FOR WINTER PREPARATION
We Are Transitioning into Colder Weather; See Tips Below for Winter Preparation and Safety!

  1. Fall is the time of year where the mornings are brisk, but afternoons often still get warm. We recommend you dress in layers to stay warm in the mornings but allows you to accommodate for temperatures getting warmer throughout the day.
  2. We recommend keeping thermostats set between 70-74 degrees.
  3. Test your heat beforehand to ensure it’s working properly so that any possible issues can be fixed before you need it.
  4. Keep in mind, in the event of a power outage, the main building does have a generator. This will provide emergency lighting in the halls. We do recommend that you have a flashlight in a designated area as emergency lighting will not be in resident apartments or in Villas.
  5. Be prepared for an early snow or ice event and give yourself extra time to move more carefully without being in a hurry…whether by foot, scooter, or vehicle. We have a lot of asphalt and concrete surfaces to clear, so please be patient with the snow crew and give them plenty of time and space to complete their work.

If you need to put in a work order, please feel free to call the front desk at 812-552-0500. Thanks!

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT
Dale Vanest
Bus Driver & Maintenance Assistant

Dale is Tradition of Columbus' part-time Maintenance Assistant and part-time Bus Driver. Dale is always on the go, helping out in any way that he can. Dale has been praised by several family members for going above and beyond.

Dale is the first person to offer to help set up or volunteer at any of our events we have at Traditions. In the past year, we have had Dale in a variety of costumes. He was also the first person to volunteer for our Dunk the Director event. He is warm and kind and we are very lucky to have him on our team!

Thank you, Dale for everything you do for our community, our residents, and our families!
TRADITIONS APPLE PIE
Traditions Management challenged each of their communities to make the best apple pie possible. We had so much fun with the Traditions' Apple Pie Contest and loved that we got to share these delicious pies with our residents and their families, as well as some of our future residents. We can’t keep Chef Jamie's masterpiece a secret, so we are sharing our recipe for all to taste! Let us know how your pie turned out! Click button below for recipe!
