FRIDAY NIGHT SERVICES ARE NOW AT 8:00 PM
IN PERSON AND ON ZOOM
FOLLOWED BY AN ONEG SHABBAT
A MESSAGE FROM
THE RABBI
WE ARE BACK!!! The last few weeks have been full of special services and programs!!
Most of what we are doing is both in-person and Zoom. This past Sunday, June 26th, we had the Welcome Back Brunch with over 90 people in attendance to hear congregant Ron Marr give a fascinating PowerPoint talk on the history of Tucker Island. On shabbat morning, June 25th, Cantor Sara Geller joined us via zoom for services. Cantor Geller davened, leyned Torah, Chanted Haftarah, and taught us several insights into the Text and our liturgy. What a blessing it is to have here join us regularly. (Next service will be Friday evening, July 15th) On Friday evening, June 24th 80+ people joined us for a beach service in Loveladies. On Friday, June 17th, 60+ people joined us for services on the beach in Spray Beach. On Friday and Saturday, June 3rd and 4th, we celebrated the Bar Mitzvah of Jacob Yudman.

To give you an idea of the summer ahead, here is an incomplete list of what is planned for the JCC community over the next few weeks:

We are having weekly Mah Jonng and Canasta, our two JCC Bazaars (In July and August), a 3-part Music series (July 10th, August 28th, and September 18th). Our classes and Torah study continue weekly. WAX has its Paid-up membership Luncheon at Wally’s in Surf City, on Wednesday, July 6th, with additional programming all summer. Also, on July 13th, join WAX for a Wednesday walking tour starting from the Pavilion at Barnegat Light (next to Kubels).

Don’t forget that on Friday evening, July 15th, Dr. Eric Mandel will be joining the JCC community to give us his annual update on Israel and the Middle East. Dr. Mandel will begin his talk and PowerPoint presentation at 7:00 pm. Services will then begin at 8:00 and be led by Cantor Geller (appearing on Zoom). After services, during an Oneg Shabbat, the JCC community will have an opportunity to Schmooze with Dr. Mandel.

And plan for beach services as follows:

July 8th - Loveladies
July 22nd - Spray Beach
July 29th - Loveladies
August 12th- Spray Beach
August 26th - Loveladies

The point of this Shabbat message is that after 2 years we are back and as busy as ever. Expect some rust as we get our sea(shore) legs back!!! And while we know that our covid policies are not strict enough for some, and too strict for others, please know that we are doing our very best, with the advice of our medical professionals to come together safely and prudently and in a way that will bring tradition and fun to all.

The one thing I know is that seeing all of you faces over these last few weeks has brought a smile to my face and has made a difference for your JCC home. I am grateful to God, and I am grateful to all, and each, of you.

As we come together, please remember that what makes the JCC special is the combination of the people, this incredible island, and the beautiful sanctuary and building that we call home. What a blessing it all is.

I am looking forward to a summer season full of fun, learning, praying, playing, singing, dancing, and just being together.

Shabbat Shalom – Rabbi Michael S. Jay
It was wonderful being together last Sunday in the building for our WELCOME BACK BRUNCH. Over 90 members enjoyed a brunch of bagels, sandwiches, fruit, rugalach and cookies both in the social hall and outside in a tent rented for the occasion. Member Ron Marr kept everyone engaged with his talk about Tucker Island, the Atlantis of the Jersey Shore.

Many thanks to the Membership Committee who organized the event and the volunteers who helped make it all happen: Paul Levine, Committee Chair, Jill Denker, Cliff Denker, Lenore Forsted, Joyce Levine, Irene Babst, Suzie Geier, Stu Lehrer and Rose Valentine.
Special thanks to our kitchen staff Sue and Debbie and our house staff Oscar and Diane.

Wednesday we had both games of MAH JONGG and CANASTA. Look for information about a class for learning canasta.

Torah Reading:
Parashat Korach
Numbers 16:1-18:32
Here Reading

Parashat Korach recounts the rebellion of Korach (a cousin of Moses and Aaron), Dathan, Abiram, and 250 of their followers. Some rebels are swallowed by the ground, while others are consumed by a fire from God and others die in a plague. The portion ends by describing gifts given to priests and Levites.

Concealed by By Esther Amini

Esther Amini grew up in Queens, New York, during the freewheeling 1960s. She also grew up in a Persian-Jewish household, the American-born daughter of parents who had fled Mashhad, Iran. In Concealed, she tells the story of being caught between these two worlds: the dutiful daughter of tradition-bound parents who hungers for more self-determination than tradition allows.

ENDOWMENT FUND

Herb and Selma z”l Shapiro established the first individual Endowment Fund in memory of his father, as part of the JCC’s Endowment Fund portfolio.

Since then, three additional individual Endowment Funds have been established. Other members are encouraged to also provide for the future of our JCC by establishing similar funds. Please consider adding to this number.

A donation of at least $50,000 to the endowment fund will allow the donor to name one of the funds as the donor wishes. All such named funds will be joined together to be part of the Endowment Fund portfolio.

Endowment funds are necessary to ensure the continuation and well being of our congregation. All members are encouraged to help this important effort by contributing to this portfolio, whether as a specific named individual fund, or as a general donation. The donation can be spread over one, two, or three years, and can be paid via check, donation of appreciated stock, wills, or from the RMD of your IRA or 401K account. Your gift to the fund can be sent to the JCC Office. Please mark your check accordingly.
