Mental Health Awareness Month, National Police Week top May Agenda
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. This year’s theme, You Are Not Alone, speaks to our need to find ways to stay connected with our community.

There is no one face of mental health. It crosses every human boundary. There are ways we can strengthen our mental health, which we know firsthand through our partnership in the jails with the Department of Public Health (SFDPH).

Three years ago, the Sheriff’s Office created psychiatric behavioral health assessment and intervention teams at County Jail #3 comprised of SFSO employees, SFDPH jail medical services and jail behavioral health services. Teams observe and interact with justice-involved individuals who need more intensive, focused psychiatric services and have a history of violence.

Little miracles occur every day as people with behavioral health issues successfully re-enter the jail’s general population, and eventually the community, where teams assist returning residents with transition needs.

The Sheriff's Office just opened a third Psychiatric Sheltered Living Unit at County Jail #3. In addition, there is a Behavioral Health Assessment Team posted to County Jail #2.
National Police Week May 9-15, 2021
This week we’re honoring peace officers everywhere and remembering those who gave their lives serving their community during National Police Week.

Yesterday evening, I watched the National Police Officer’s 33rd annual candlelight vigil live stream from Washington, D.C., a solemn and sacred occasion made all the more poignant by this week’s unforeseen deaths of two California fellow public safety officers.

In the video below, Assistant Sheriff Tanzanika Carter shares information on commemorative events taking place to remember our fallen officers.

Stay safe, be well and take care.

As Pandemic Recedes, Jails Get Ready to Resume Visiting, Programs
As more people get vaccinated against COVID-19, it is becoming safer for vaccinated people to do things we stopped doing because of the pandemic. This extends to the jails where we suspended in-person visiting, programs and religious services in March of 2020 to protect everyone from COVID-19.

Now we are looking at ways to bring in-person visiting, programs and services back safely. We know the COVID-19 vaccine is safe and that people who are fully vaccinated are less likely to be infected and less likely to spread the COVID-19 virus to others. Jail Health Services, a section of the Department of Public Health, has administered more than 1,100 vaccinations to people in jail and continues to offer vaccination opportunities.

Our custody staff is reviewing all options for resuming jail activities through a phased approach, allowing for safe human-to-human interaction. We will comply with all city, state and national guidelines for testing, physical distancing and personal protective equipment.

We will keep you posted as our progress. Thank you for your support.
