Update regarding our policy

The CUMC Church Council has voted unanimously to follow the CDC Covid Data tracker for Morris County to evaluate weekly Covid levels. This data tracker can be found by Clicking Here.

Going forward, this tracker will help guide us in determining our indoor mask usage for all CUMC functions. Covid levels and recommendations are updated weekly on Thursday nights by the CDC. These updates will be used at CUMC from Friday-Friday.

Beginning this weekend, signs will be visible in the building indicating what level Morris County is at and what the mask requirements will be for our building for CUMC functions.  Please see chart below:

Extra masks will continue to be available throughout our building. You may also use the CDC tracker prior to your visit to know ahead of time whether you will need your mask.

Thank you for your ongoing patience, and expressions

of care for your neighbors!

If you have any Covid symptoms, please stay home, worship online, and/or visit a doctor. Thank you.

In Our Prayers

During the last Sunday's worship service, we received the following requests for prayers...

  • For our nation as we recognize Juneteenth, the evils of slavery and the legacy of racial injustice that continues. Bless us with a renewed vision for racial healing, racial justice, and racial reconciliation.
  • For the men who are fathers, father figures that they may be compassionate, wise, generous, and loving.
  • Of Healing and Concern for Jaclyn-young woman diagnosed with breast cancer (NT).
  • Of Concern for my oldest and dearest friend, Joan, in the death of her brother, Bob and for his wife, Sue, and their sons. (AF)
  • Of Healing for my brother, Mike D, after emergency back surgery last week. (SD)

This Week

Sunday, June 26th 10:00 Worship Service

Dr. Igor Kraiz, Chief Medical Officer at the Central Clinical Hospital #5 in Kharkiv, Ukraine, will be speaking at Chatham UMC!

Dr. Igor and his colleagues have sent us various videos since the war began in late February. Our congregation sent video greetings on Easter, and they have watched our online worship experiences from the shelters in Kharkiv. We hope you can come, hear Dr. Igor speak in a round table discussion with Pastor Jeff and a Ukrainian translator, and meet him after worship on Sunday morning, June 26, 2022! All are welcome to attend.

This Sunday’s service will feature a piano solo from our organist and accompanist, Mike Maguire. Join us!

Thank you to our musicians and artists for your hard work during the 2021-2022 season and for making each Sunday special with your music throughout the year. Our Covenant Choir, Wind Ensemble, Praise Band, Ukulele Orchestra, and Wesley Ringers will begin again in September.

If you are interested in singing with the choir for an easy-to-learn anthem, you are invited to join our two pick-up choirs over the Summer on the Sundays of July 24th and August 14th. We will meet in the Music Room at 9:00 a.m. before the 10:00 a.m. service. For more information contact, Peter Hill, music director at petepiano@mac.com.

Chatham UMC continues our effort to collect funds and then distribute those donations as reparations each time the congregation sings a Spiritual during the Sunday service. Early American Black Hymns and Spiritual Songs whose authors were not recorded never received the payment that they deserved when their music was published. This effort on their behalf is a small, but powerful, way to honor their enormously important contributions to the lexicon of hymnody. CUMC recently sent our first donation to the Newark Boys Chorus School.

Summer Reading Suggestions

This summer, whether you’re at the shore, on a flight, or sitting under a shade tree, take a book with you. Reading expands our imaginations, enlightens us, and increases our vocabulary.

Here are a few suggestions for your summer reading enjoyment: For inspiration and spiritual growth try Forgiveness: A Lenten Study by Marjorie Thompson or The Return of The Prodigal Son and other books by Henri Nowen.

For those interested in early Christianity and how it grew, try Bart Ehrman’s The Triumph of Christianity: How a Forbidden Religion Swept the World or Charlotte Allen’s The Human Christ: The Search for the Historical Jesus

While it may seem like heavy reading, Philippians and Ephesians are brief letters by the Apostle Paul who provides an insight into the issues that he and the early church faced. Philippians is a letter of thanks and love to the people of Philippi. It contains some of Paul’s most beautiful statements of love and Christology. Ephesians was written to help the early church appreciate God’s purpose, grace, and goals for the church. Add 1 Corinthians 13 and you have wonderful words of life.

The display cart outside our church library has additional suggestions, plus instructions about borrowing books. You can view the entire CUMC Library holdings at http://www.chathamumc.com/cumc-library/
