Mission: Grow in God's grace. Love with all our heart. Serve with all our strength.
A Word from Pastor Beth
Friends,

It has been a joy and a privilege to be able to lead in worship over these last eight weeks. Pastor Sumesh and I are both grateful for the opportunity. This Sunday, Pastor Tom will be returning after his renewal leave.

As we enter into August, I pray you will continue to join us in worship either live or online. On August 1st we will talk about “Worship”; the Scripture will be Psalm 150. In this Scripture we are told to “let everything that breathes praise the Lord!” What does praising God mean to you?

On August 8th we will gather with The Lighthouse Church (TLC). TLC is a non-denominational and multilingual Indian community church that serves the Dallas area and worships in our church facility. Pastor Sumesh will lead this international service as we share in this time of praise together.

We start our new schedule on August 15th. The outdoor Rise Up service will continue to gather at 8:00 am. Modern worship will start at 9:00 am and Traditional service will start at 11:00 am. In the ten o’clock hour on the 15th we will have a time of fellowship, and a chance to check out some mission and ministry opportunities at the church. Please note: until further notice, all indoor services will be held in the Ministry Center.

This new schedule will provide us all opportunities to worship and gather together. As we transition to this schedule, please know that our regathering team, our medical advisory team, and the staff continue to work to ensure a safe worship experience. Please work with us so we can all enjoy this time.

Shalom,
Pastor Beth

Upcoming
For those of you that may like to know more about FUMC Coppell, her history, DNA, Methodism, vision/focus for the future, and opportunities for spiritual growth, this class is the NEXT STEP for you.

This brief but informative prerequisite for church membership will look at Methodism from the prism of how it fits into Christendom, along with Methodist distinctives, and then we will explore more fully FUMC Coppell and what makes her unique – history, mission, vision and how you can be involved in moving the church forward as a disciple of Jesus Christ. At this time the class will be on zoom and be led by Pastors Beth, Sumesh and Tom. Next class will be this Sunday, August 1 at 10:45 on Zoom.

Contact Pastor Sumesh to sign up.
Caregiving Heroes

Caregivers often must decide on additional care or live-in accommodations for their loved ones. The August speaker, Marilyn Scott, RN, will share information regarding the various levels of medical, custodial and senior care services to help caregivers understand the differences and choose the best continuum of care for their loved ones. Her nursing career has spanned more than 50 years and included ER, IV therapy and wound care. Caregiving Heroes will meet virtually on Wednesday, August 4 at 7:00 pm. Contact CaregivingHeroesGroup@gmail.com to request the link. All are welcome to attend.
Golf Tournament

The rain forced us to postpone and reschedule the FUMC Coppell Bob Boyles Memorial Golf Tournament. The new date is August 8 at 1:30 pm. We will still be playing at the Wildhorse Golf Club at Robson Ranch and the tournament format will remain the same. Register HERE

Any questions, email Shane Schulz at shaneschulz@verizon.net.

New Schedule Begins August 15
Couple of Important Notes

  • On August 15, we will have a fellowship time at 10 am instead of Life Groups to introduce the fall plans for ministries.
  • All indoor worship services will continue to be held in the Ministry Center until further notice. The Sanctuary is still under construction.
Confirmation
Confirmation at First United Methodist Church of Coppell is an important step in a young person’s faith journey. The sixth grade year is when most students go through confirmation and is a year that, with the help of their parents and mentors, will make the significant decision to become full members of the United Methodist Church. This school-year is designed to challenge students to grow in their fellowship, commitment to the church, and to deepen their relationships with each other and to God. This year isn’t meant to be seen as a destination, but rather a step in their Christian journey.

At this time, classes will tentatively start at the beginning of September and will be in person in the Student Ministries side of the Ministry Center. Depending on parent feedback, we might add in an optional Zoom for those who might be out of town. Classes ending and service of Baptism and Confirmation will be the first weekend in May.

Children's Ministry
Do you just love hanging out with children?

Well, I have the perfect opportunity for you. Starting September 1, we will have 2 children’s Life Groups. The ages are 4th / 5th grade boys and 4th / 5th grade girls. What I am looking for is two adults for each group that can come, share the supplied devotional and then just talk with the kids. The groups will meet every Wednesday evening from 5:30–6:15 pm. Prayerfully consider this opportunity to be a part of these amazing kids and their faith walk.

Contact me, Kathy Braem at kbraem@fumccoppell.org if you are interested.
Annual Backpack Tag Contest

Calling all artists! We need some awesome designs for our backpack tag. Our verse this year is John 20:21 “Peace be with you, as the Father sent me, so I am sending you.”

Write the verse on a 3x5 card and then illustrate the verse. Scan and email your design to Kay Thomas at kthomas@fumccoppell.org by August 8.
Volunteers Needed!

We are looking for some volunteers to help in Children’s Ministry this fall with Children’s Sunday School: ages K-5th. Please prayerfully consider helping out with the children. I can honestly say that you will feel blessed. If you would be interested in helping, please contact Kathy Braem at kbraem@fumccoppell.org.
End of Summer

At the beginning of the summer kids in grades K–5th grade received a sheet along with stickers to be filled out as they attended camps at church. On August 15 bring your sticker filled sheet to church with you. This will be blessing of the backpack day and you will also receive some treats a small reward for coming to camp this summer. I can’t wait to see you!

August 1

We'll be talking more about how Jesus shows us how to care for other people! No dinner during the summer. We'll meet outside (students can drop their masks outside if they would like). There will be snacks and games, friends are invited!
August 4

The plan for the start of fall is to return to having things inside (masks on still), but the student area has been left alone for awhile and could use some love. Students can come help their space by cleaning, organizing and getting things ready for the fall!

Sign up here.

Missions
Farmers & Gardeners

If you may be interested in leading a one-time Urban Farming opportunity in Dallas where there are food deserts, please contact Leslie Hicks at lesliehicks922@yahoo.com. We can go visit Owenwood Farm & Neighbor space in East Dallas, or Bonton Farms in South Dallas and see if there is an opportunity to get our hands in the dirt soon. The Owenwood Farm & Neighbor space is a small farm and community space run by Methodist people. Bonton Farms in South Dallas is more established with goats and farm and a market space (and gourmet dinner space for fundraising).

Please contact Leslie Hicks at lesliehicks922@yahoo.com to discuss a possible partnership or one-time event.
Mission of the Month

August Mission of the Month is designated for Metrocrest Services Toilet Paper Challenge. In 2020, the Metrocrest Services Food Pantry provided 25,638 of our neighbors with food and hygiene supplies (including toilet paper). Every year toilet paper is one of the most expensive items for the panty to purchase. With your help, we can help Metrocrest reduce this expense and use those funds for other community needs. Help collect 100,000 rolls of toilet paper by National Toilet Paper Day (Thursday, August 26). Please bring your packaged toilet paper donations this month either to the Ministry Center or drop off in the bin in the hall by Rosenburg Chapel. You can also make checks payable to FUMC with memo “Toilet Paper” or you can TEXT 2 GIVE. Text to 73256 with subject line as FUMCC. You will receive a link and simply follow the instructions.
