Happy Sunday, Pride!

I hope each of you had a wonderful weekend and that you stayed safe during Friday evening's storms.

This past week, I talked with several students and about their anxieties and worries. Over and over, I hear about stories of events that happened that were out of their control. With that in mind, how can we model for our children how they can handle situations when they are out of their control?

  1. We cannot control circumstances. The truth is that there are big things we cannot control. We can't change the weather. Freak accidents happen. Unexplainable diseases overtake our health. There are also little things that happen. The schedule has to change due to a fire drill. Another child says an unkind word (or does an unkind deed). The key to the laminator was misplaced and teachers couldn't laminate their materials (true story). These circumstances have occurred since the beginning of time and will continue throughout our lifetime. They overwhelm us because we are caught by surprise when they happen to us. Bad things happen to lots of good people everyday. When they happen to us, it is so easy to forget that fact. We question "Why me?" but realistically "Why not me?" is the more appropriate question when difficult circumstances come. Hardships are not particularly selective. This perspective is so hard to have when troubles arrive at our door.
  2. We can control our responses. Our children need to know that they can get back up if they get knocked down. They can pause, understand what happened, and make a wise decision. They can know that automatic reactions are not as productive as thoughtful responses. They can decide to express emotions appropriately and keep them in check. They can choose the high road of solutions instead of the low roads of retaliation or denial. They can ask for help to know best how to handle the situation. Our children need to know that every problem is not a nail that always needs a hammer. There are multiple strategies we can use to respond to difficult circumstances. As

I mentioned a few weeks back about wanting our children to learn to be independent and to make good decisions when things have to change. The best way they can do that is by following our example. Let's show them how to be effective "responders" rather than rash "reactors."

Strength and Blessings,

~Dr. Compton

A Note from Ms. Carr

Greetings,

It was our final week for self-control lessons. Next month will be a new topic. October will be full of lots of activities for the whole school and elementary students especially. Please make sure to read each newsletter fully and carefully and watch the Riverwalk Academy Facebook page to stay current with all the happenings. I know sometimes the newsletter is exceptionally long but I promise, it is all important. Please let me know if you want any resources regarding self control.

Have a fabulous first week of October.

Hugs,

Mrs. Carr

A Note from Ms. Menges

Hello Lion Families,

Sorry I was a bit MIA this week. I was "fortunate" enough to get called up for jury duty this past week. Although I missed some time at Riverwalk, I am grateful I still got to come in some days to get a little work done and see all of my people. I hope everyone had a nice weekend and stayed safe with all the storms going on (I am writing this prior to the weekend so if for some reason there are no storms, then disregard). RiverTech Students

(a catchy-name for our 10th-12th grade students)

A Note from Mr. Ball

Hello PRIDE,

I hope you all have had a great week. I want to remind everyone that our high school students at York Tech will not have class on Thursday or Friday, October 6th and 7th, as these are teacher workdays. As we enter October, I want to encourage students to get involved in extra curricular activities. We are beginning or BPA club at York Tech, and making plans for a 4H club. Our students are showing a lot of leadership and taking ownership in their future. We want to support them through this journey and provide them with those learning opportunities outside of the classroom. If your student has an interest in a club or organization have them talk to me and I will see what we might be able to offer.

Please continue to encourage your students to take advantage of opportunities that are being made available to them on campus. In addition to our newsletter you can see what is being offered on the Padlet.

Thank you for your continued support,

Richard
