The Color of Fear Being Shown Again

The Community Unity Center at Maplewood United Methodist Church, 7409 Flora Ave. has scheduled two more showings of "The Color of Fear". It is a 90 minute film about the impact of racism on all of us. We have also scheduled an evening where we will watch a 30 minute film about anti-racist Jane Elliot followed by a discussion of both films.

"The Color of Fear" will be shown:

Saturday, May 11 at 10:30am

Tuesday, May 14 at 7pm

"An Interview with Jane Elliot" followed by a discussion of both films

Tuesday, May 28 at 7pm

It's not too late to join the book study

Continues on May 14 and 21. We will meet at 7 p.m.,” at the church OR if weather permits, in Sutton Loop Park. Bring a chair to the park and look for the group. Text Jan Harsh 314-780-1797 with any questions. The book follows Barbara Brown Taylor as she left full-time ministry to become a university professor, a decision that allowed her to discover new ways to "keep the faith" outside of traditional Christianity. Now, in An Altar in the World, Taylor shares her techniques for encountering God far beyond the walls of the church. The book is available for pick up at the church

Dear Friends,

When my husband, Steve, was growing up, his Dad would sometimes make the observation—especially after a neighbor or friend had made a mistake that caused a project at hand to not turn out well—"It’s not that he isn’t smart enough. He lacks wisdom.”

We all know that some very bright people have been known to do some not so bright things, because they lacked wisdom, which is defined by Merriam-Webster Dictionary as “a choice making good sense.”

I believe Jesus, was certainly in favor of making wise choices as evidenced by the way he closed his Sermon on the Mount:

“Everyone, then, who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.  The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall because it had been founded on rock.  And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand.  The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell—and great was its fall!”   (Matthew 7: 24 – 27, CEB)

This Sunday when we continue the sermon series, “Make Good Choices” we talk about wisdom and will add to the list of good questions that help us make better decisions: “What is the wise thing to do?”

We will also celebrate the baptism of six children, whose parents are making the commitment to raise their children in the Christian faith—grounding their faith in Jesus, like the wise man who built his house upon the rock. Along with the joy of these baptisms we will have the joy of welcoming five new members who are choosing to “plant their spiritual feet” with the people of Maplewood UMC.

As I said at the end of the service last Sunday, “Just come to worship next Sunday!” And of course, after the service, stay for cake and a time to celebrate!

God’s grace and peace be with you,

Pastor Kim

General Conference final updates

On Sunday I read from part of Bishop Robert Farr’s letter to Missouri United Methodists about the changes that were made at the UMC General Conference which ended on Friday, May 3, 2024. The Bishop and many others have noted that this was a historic General Conference which made decisions that will significantly change the way the United Methodist Church accomplishes ministry on behalf of Christ. To help you learn more about what happened as General Conference, this newsletter includes links to two videos and several headlines that also serve as links to more detailed news articles. If all you do is scan the headlines below you will have an idea of some of the major changes that were made by this General Conference. I do hope you will take time click on some of these links in order to be more informed about the denomination in which you hold your membership.

As I shared on Sunday, the Bishop invites us all to join him virtually via livestream or in person, if you are a registered member of the Missouri Annual Conference, at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 7, for the Opening Plenary of the Missouri Annual Conference. During this plenary session Bishop Farr will discuss General Conference and its impact on United Methodist churches in Missouri. That session will be livestreamed on the Missouri Annual Conference Facebook page and at MOACInfo.com. The recording will be available for you to view and download after the plenary at MOACInfo.com.

In addition to learning more about General Conference through the resources provide, please also take a moment to reach out to Maplewood UMC member, Colette Cummings, who served as a General Conference delegate for Missouri. Colette was elected in 2019 to serve as the General Conference delegate for the 2020 General Conference. Because of delays related to the pandemic, her approximately one year commitment stretched to about FIVE years. As a General Conference delegate, Colette has also served as a Jurisdictional Conference delegate.  She has been part of bringing about major changes in the United Methodist Church over the past five years.  Once Colette gets some rest, we will be hearing more from her about her experiences! In the meantime, thank you for this amazing gift of service, Colette!!

Will you be a Greeter at the May Community UNity Dinner?

We are so grateful to have received a grant for the food for our Community UNity Dinners. Because of that, we are no longer asking folks to sign up to bring food. We ARE asking you to sign up to greet our guests. As you know, several families and friends from the Community Unity Dinners visited our potluck last Sunday.

We would love to continue those relationships at our Community Unity Dinners. We have two greeters at the front door, and two more sit at the nametag table. Please consider signing up for this important ministry.
