Dear Friends,
When my husband, Steve, was growing up, his Dad would sometimes make the observation—especially after a neighbor or friend had made a mistake that caused a project at hand to not turn out well—"It’s not that he isn’t smart enough. He lacks wisdom.”
We all know that some very bright people have been known to do some not so bright things, because they lacked wisdom, which is defined by Merriam-Webster Dictionary as “a choice making good sense.”
I believe Jesus, was certainly in favor of making wise choices as evidenced by the way he closed his Sermon on the Mount:
“Everyone, then, who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall because it had been founded on rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell—and great was its fall!” (Matthew 7: 24 – 27, CEB)
This Sunday when we continue the sermon series, “Make Good Choices” we talk about wisdom and will add to the list of good questions that help us make better decisions: “What is the wise thing to do?”
We will also celebrate the baptism of six children, whose parents are making the commitment to raise their children in the Christian faith—grounding their faith in Jesus, like the wise man who built his house upon the rock. Along with the joy of these baptisms we will have the joy of welcoming five new members who are choosing to “plant their spiritual feet” with the people of Maplewood UMC.
As I said at the end of the service last Sunday, “Just come to worship next Sunday!” And of course, after the service, stay for cake and a time to celebrate!
God’s grace and peace be with you,
Pastor Kim
