Sign up for the Frontiers Mock Study Section this fall
|
|
This fall, Frontiers will begin offering pre-submission review of NIH grant proposals through our mock study section. The mock study section simulates the NIH peer review process and offers investigators a chance to receive feedback on an R or K-series grant proposal before submitting the final application. Each application submitted to the mock study section will receive preliminary scores and written critiques from three reviewers with relevant expertise. Final scores will be assigned and returned to the applicant following discussion at the mock study section meeting on November 29.
How do I request proposal review?
Please submit an online Letter of Intent Form by September 26. The letter of intent requires a draft “specific aims” page and a list of three suggested reviewers from Frontiers partner institutions who have appropriate expertise; additional reviewers from external institutions may also be included.
Eligible researchers will be asked to submit the narrative components of their grant application by the deadline in October. Visit the Frontiers Mock Study Section page for a detailed list of requirements and key dates.
Who is eligible?
This program is open to clinical and translational researchers at all Frontiers partner institutions. We welcome submissions from:
- Children’s Mercy Hospital
- Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences
- Kansas State University
- Saint Luke’s Health System
- University of Kansas Health System
- University of Kansas – Lawrence
- University of Kansas Medical Center
- University of Kansas School of Medicine – Wichita
- University of Missouri – Kansas City

Announcement of Opportunity for the URA Visiting Scholars Program Fall 2022 Award Cycle
|
|
Announcement of Opportunity for the fall 2022 award cycle under Universities Research Association’s, or URA, Visiting Scholars Program, or VSP. Proposals for this cycle are due Monday, August 29, 2022, and awards are anticipated to be announced at the end of September.
Individual proposals may be submitted by researchers who are faculty, postdocs, or graduate students at URA member universities. Researchers are defined as graduate students, postdocs, or faculty doing research in areas such as high energy physics experiments, astrophysics, theory, accelerator physics, engineering, materials science, computer science, quantum science and technology, and accelerator R&D, related to the Fermilab mission. Applicants must be employed by or, in the case of graduate students, enrolled at URA member institutions during the award term.
The URA Visiting Scholars Award Program is supported by contributions from the URA member universities. The VSP awards provide financial support for faculty and students from URA's member universities to work at Fermilab for periods of up to one year. URA makes two rounds of awards each year, in the spring and fall. The application deadline for the spring 2023 cycle is Monday, February 27, 2023.

As harmful bacteria increasingly outwit antibiotics, some scientists are turning to a biological weapon to fight them: specialized viruses that slay bacteria. Now, a team of researchers based in Germany offers a potentially faster and better way to create these bacteriophages, or simply phages. Science
There are three ways to die: of injury, disease, or old age. Over time, humans have gotten better at avoiding the first two, but as we get older, senescence—the gradual deterioration of bodily functions with age—is inevitable. Some species seem to do better than others, though: Take the hydra, a tiny freshwater creature that some scientists have deemed potentially immortal. Wired
If you start talking with Thomas Keller or Dani Or about farm machinery, sooner or later the conversation will turn to dinosaurs. Why would two experts in the biology and structure of soils segue from tractors and combines to extinct behemoths? Because today’s farm vehicles, they explain in a recent paper, have become nearly as heavy as the largest animals that ever stomped the Earth—and the sheer weight is crushing one of the world’s most precious resources: fertile soil. National Geographic
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) today announced an additional investment of more than $14 million to support agricultural workforce training in historically underserved communities that will increase the resilience of the U.S. meat and poultry processing sector. This investment is part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s ongoing efforts through the American Rescue Plan to strengthen the nation’s food supply chain by promoting fair and competitive agricultural markets.
