Memorial Day Observance at Green Hills
One event that I look forward to attending each year is the Memorial Day Observance at Green Hills Memorial Park. The event has extraordinary speakers, color guard presentations, skydivers, patriotic music and flyovers. Jennifer Olvera, Events Coordinator and Customer Relations Manager, for Green Hills has organized and implemented these inspiring events for years.

When I learned that the Vietnam Moving Wall was going to be at Green Hills over the Memorial Day weekend, I contacted Jennifer to see if I could visit to do an Out and About article. The Vietnam Moving Wall travels all around the country, and it is a half-sized replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. It includes the names of more than 58,000 servicemen and women who gave their lives in service during the Vietnam War. This past weekend, visitors had an opportunity to view the wall. Read More.

Chamber's Salute for Military Appreciation Month
Due to COVID-19 the Chamber was unable to host the 5K for Freedom this year. In order show support for the brave men and women who serve this country, a 31-day Salute to our Armed Forces was created. This salute will recognize the members of the United States military and honor veterans of each branch.

To all of the men and women who have served, our deepest heartfelt gratitude. And THANK YOU to all the Chamber members who participated in the #31daysofsalute for #militaryappreciationmonth. It has been truly inspiring to see your support for our military for #nationalmilitaryappreciationmonth! View photo reel here.
Leadership Torrance
Leadership Torrance is a program, founded in 1983, that focuses on developing effective leaders from across the South Bay. Sponsored by the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Torrance provides opportunities for emerging leaders to take an active role towards building a stronger community. The mission of the Leadership Torrance program is to develop effective leaders by encouraging community connections through partnerships with City officials and local businesses.

For the next several months, this column will feature graduates of the program and highlight the positive growth of these individuals.

1  Where were you in your career right before joining Leadership Torrance? When I participated in Leadership Torrance I was the Business Services Manager for the Carson/ Lomita /Torrance Workforce Investment Network which was a partnership of those cities administered by the City of Torrance.  WIN connected businesses and job seekers through funding allocated by the federal Workforce Investment Act. At that time I was a City of Torrance employee but paid through the grant funds allocated to WIN.  My background was in private industry, having worked for a national construction general contractor in human resources; in retail as a store manager; in hospitality in human resources and then accounting for a hotel; and lastly in staffing working in outside sales.  I was able to bring that experience into a government role which enabled me to relate to the businesses that I served. As a City of Torrance employee I had the opportunity to participate in Leadership Torrance which really did benefit my career, not only by allowing me to more clearly promote the services of WIN, but by building and solidifying connections in the Torrance community that I still have to this day.
