WE ARE ONLY TRAVELERS

Once upon a time, a much-revered wise man walked into the magnificent palace of a great king, made his way into the throne room, and approached the king. "Sir," he said, "I’d like a night's lodging here in your inn."
"This is no inn!" growled the king. "This is my royal palace." ''Ah," said the wise man. "And who owned this palace before you?" "My father," said the king.
"And where is he?" asked the wise man. "He's dead."
"And, who owned this place before your father?" "Why, my grandfather!"
"And where is he?"
"Dead, of course!" said the king irately. "And before him?" asked the wise man.
"My great-grandfather owned this place. And, yes, he's dead too."
"Ah, I see," said the wise man. "'So, this is a place, where people lodge for a brief while and then move on.  Did I hear you say this is not an inn for travelers?"

Our Easter season is quickly coming to an end. Next week we will celebrate the feast of the Ascension and then after that Pentecost. In these great events Christ is leaving his disciples. Christ’s Ascension and his gift of sending the spirit in his place offer us a new perspective on our life here. Faith demands a perspective on our lives as being “travelers” on this journey to another place. There is a saying if you don’t know where you are going you are bound to end up somewhere else. Christ leaving beckons his disciples and all of us to follow. Christ’s leaving and sending the spirit shows us that there is more than what we see. Christ reminds us there is another life, one eternal that awaits us.

We need to live with that perspective. Knowing there is another life calls us to live this life with a greater sense of purpose. These next feasts of Ascension and Pentecost open for us the realization that we must not squander our years, our days, or our hours on useless and unimportant things. We need to fill our time here, whether it be long or short, with things worthy of disciple. How much of this past week was wasted on foolish things and how much was spent on worthwhile and valuable things? The choice is yours. We are only travelers here and we need to act like that!
