Ella Cavlan, Director of Government Relations, recently shared an inspiring story of a client who found newfound confidence in her identity through PESA’s program. This story encapsulates the essence of PESA’s mission and the profound impact their services have on LGBTQIA+ youth year round.
Cavlan, a social worker by training, worked closely with a young client who initially struggled with her identity knowing she wasn’t straight but couldn’t figure out where she lay on the spectrum. "By the end of it, she felt much more confident in her sexuality and continued to explore her gender identity. I noticed a significant boost in her confidence—not just in terms of self-esteem, but in developing a more established sense of identity and embracing her queerness with greater assurance," Cavlan recounted.
PESA has been instrumental in providing individual psychosocial support tailored to LGBTQIA+ youth. Understanding the importance of relatable mentorship, PESA carefully pairs clients with practitioners sharing similar demographics. This approach fosters a deeper connection and understanding, aiding queer teens in navigating the unique challenges they face.
PESA's psychoeducational presentations are crucial in normalizing discussions about gender expression and identity among students. Looking ahead, PESA has ambitious plans to further support queer youth. One of the most promising initiatives is the LGBTQIA High School Ambassador Program in the Antelope Valley. This program will empower students or recent graduates to act as ambassadors, organizing groups, mentoring peers, and creating safe spaces for other queer students.
Cavlan emphasizes the ongoing need for such programs, stating, “Queerness is now much more widely accepted and understood, and openly queer individuals can be found everywhere. However, significant stigma and unsafe spaces still exist. As an organization dedicated to empowering and supporting all communities, it is crucial for us not only to maintain a safe space for those we serve but also to actively work toward expanding and promoting that safety and acceptance.”
In a climate where queer rights face judicial backlash both nationally and locally, PESA's efforts are more critical than ever. The organization’s commitment to making LGBTQIA+ youth feel safe and included underpins all their initiatives. This Pride Month, PESA celebrates the strides made and looks forward to continuing its vital work, ensuring every queer young person is embracing their identity with confidence.
