[Boston, MA, August 19, 2021] An exciting new program at Washington Heights introduces at-risk youth, ages 13 – 15, to careers in the construction industry. Inner-city boys and girls often lack opportunities for careers in these high-paying jobs, and several local groups are collaborating to introduce them to a future in construction via Build-Beyond, fulfilling their wildest imaginations. Build-Beyond, Cooperative Metropolitan Ministries (CMM), Veterans Benefits Clearinghouse Development Corporation and the Washington Heights Tenants Association, along with support from mayoral candidate John Barros, are offering an introduction to the building trades and other subjects, such as Values over Violence, CMM’s signature violence prevention program.

On August 19, 2021, mayoral candidate John Barros will join the group enrolled in the program on a visit to Turner Construction and their collaborative project with Janey Construction, located at the Downtown Boston Seaport district. Youth will have an opportunity to visit a multi-million dollar project in progress in the Seaport area of downtown Boston. “We are losing our youth to gun and gang violence every day in Boston and the hope and confidence that was once part of their daily lives has been replaced with hopelessness and despair. Build-Beyond was created to change that narrative,” said Sophia Bishop-Rice, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Build-Beyond, and Interim Executive Director of Cooperative Metropolitan Ministries (CMM).

The visit will consist of:

  • 10:00am - Construction Site Visit and Presentation by John Barros

  • 11:30am, - Luncheon @ Turner Construction Corporate Offices: 2 Seaport Lane, Boston, MA

  • 12:00pm Values over Violence Workshop @ Turner Construction Corporate Offices.

  • 1:00pm End of Visit
