Sibshops are a FREE program designed specifically for brothers and sisters (ages 8 to 12) of children with special needs or disabilities. Sibshops are a time to meet others and build friendships, have fun and take part in recreational activities, and enjoy a meal together and share feelings with others who really know what it like to have a sibling with a disability.

***Pre-registration is required by June 10th***
SD DEPT OF LABOR AND REGULATION OFFERS SUMMER PASSPORT CAREER WORKSHOPS FOR AGES 14-25. SESSIONS BEGIN JUNE 14!

SD youth ages 14-24 are welcome to visit their DLR offices for a summer full of employer engagement, life skills, industry tours, career exploration, post-secondary tours, and more. Both virtual and in-person sessions (Brookings, Huron, Madison, Mitchell, Rapid City, Sioux Falls, Watertown, and Yankton) are offered. Youth may even earn $25 for every in-person event they attend. DR. ROSS GREENE VIRTUAL TRAINING - JUNE 23 & 24 COLLABORATIVE & PROACTIVE SOLUTIONS

The Center for Disabilities is offering a training by Dr. Ross Greene, known for his influential books, The Explosive Child, Lost at School, Lost & Found, and Raising Human Beings. Dr. Greene served on the faculty at Harvard Medical School for over 20 years and is now Founding Director of the non-profit Lives in the Balance which aims to disseminate the innovative, evidence-based intervention model called Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS) and support caregivers through a vast array of free web-based resources; advocate on behalf of kids with concerning behaviors and their caregivers; and advocate for systemic changes to encourage the use of non-punitive, non-exclusionary interventions. PUBLIC INPUT INVITED ON AMENDMENTS TO SECTION 504

Section 504 prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in public and private programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance, including schools and postsecondary institutions. The U.S. Department of Education will gather public input on possible amendments to the Section 504 regulations in order to strengthen and protect the rights of students with disabilities. The Department’s Office for Civil Rights will solicit the views of people with disabilities who also have mental health needs, and their advocates.

Interested parties may go to www2.ed.gov/policy/rights/reg/ocr/ to submit comments. The Department will also hold listening sessions in the coming months.

SD PARENT CONNECTION SUMMER HOURS

SD Parent Connection offices will be closed on Monday, May 30th in observance of Memorial Day.

Summer office hours will begin Tuesday, May 31st and run through Friday, July 29th. During this time, offices will be open Mondays through Thursdays from 9am to 5pm and will be closed on Fridays.
