THE FALLEN HEROES – LESSON 2

THE FIRST CHRISTIAN MARTYR

Today as we honor the fallen heroes of our military services who gave their lives for freedom and justice, I wish to remember the fallen heroes of the Christian faith. There are many thousands who have been tortured and killed for the preaching and teaching of Christ and the Kingdom of Heaven. We will start in the Book of the Acts of the Apostles and continue daily with a few of the many accounts found in Fox’s Book of Martyrs. These were “soldiers of the cross” who preached freedom from sin in God’s army of believers.

Persecution of the believers began almost immediately after the outpouring of Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Preaching of the risen Jesus whom the Jewish leaders had crucified (Romans were only their proxy) pointed to them as guilty of innocent blood. Consequently, they lashed out with a vengeance to squelch this new movement.

Meanwhile, the Church was growing so fast that the Apostles needed help to manage things. They appointed seven deacons to help with the needs of the people. These seven had been faithful disciples of Jesus during His time here. They had all likely been among the seventy sent out by Jesus, two by two, to heal the sick, cast out demons and do miracles, signs, and wonders.

One of the seven deacons was Stephen. Acts 6:8 says, “And Stephen, full of faith and power (of the Holy Ghost), did great wonders and miracles among the people.” As he preached Jesus many of the synagogue disputed with him, but their arguments were futile against his wisdom and the Spirit within him.

He was hauled into the high priest and tried before the council. He preached the scriptural history that led up to that time. He accused them of historically killing the prophets of God. As he was preaching to them, they saw his face (Acts 6:15) as the countenance of an angel.  At the conclusion of his message, Stephen had an open vision and declared to them in Acts 7:56, “I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”  That “got their goat” and they rushed upon him. They cast him out of the city and stoned him to death. Young Saul watched over their coats as they killed Stephen.

Stephen became the first recorded martyr for the gospel of Jesus Christ. He was a hero in the Lord’s army. He was fearless. We should also fearlessly declare the word of the Lord even though the social and political climate are becoming increasingly hostile to it.

HAVING AN EAR TO HEAR

As a child I encountered all the childhood diseases. Measles, Mumps, Whooping Cough, Chicken Pox, and chronic bronchitis and they all settled in my ears. By the time I was in sixth grade I had a hearing loss. I lived with this loss of hearing for many years. I had not been to a professional audiologist for a checkup but when I finally went it showed a hearing loss. A dear friend gave me a pair of her hearing aids, and my world changed. I didn’t know that the clock ticked and once again I was hearing the birds sing. No one knows the limits that a hearing-impaired person faces. I have had many pray for me for restoration, and I believe that will happen, but the “hearing aids” have changed my life for the better. Without them things are very quiet. Yes, there are times that that proves to be an asset. LOL

There are also spiritual hearing aids that help us to “hear the voice of God.” The first and most important is the Word of God, itself, the Bible. We hear God’s voice through the written word. We must spend time reading it to “hear it for ourselves.” Many Christians rely totally on their Pastor or Bible teacher to tell you what the Bible says, but that would be the same as a “hard of hearing” person always relying on someone to tell you what someone else is saying. By the time they give you what “they” heard, it may be distorted.

We are commanded in II Timothy 2:15 to “study to show THYSELF approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (holding a straight course) the Word of God.” Do you notice it says “thyself”? That message to Timothy is also for each of us.

The second way we hear what God is saying is through preaching of the word. Faith comes through this kind of hearing. Yet, we must know the word ourselves to make sure what we are “hearing” is lining up with scripture. The more preaching you hear based on the word of God, the more your faith will be built up.

The third way we hear is through prophetic words. I believe in prophetic words as God has used me mightily in this gift. Yet, once again, ALL prophetic words will NEVER contradict what the word of God says, so you once again must know the Word of God for yourself.

The fourth way is that Holy Spirit speaks to us individually. It can be a “rhema” word as we read the “logos” of the Bible, or it can be audible. Once again, Holy Spirit will never contradict the “written word” so you must know the Word to not be deceived. Very few people hear the audible voice of God. Don’t pursue this. Satan counterfeits God’s voice very subtly. If you aren’t mature in the knowledge of the written word you will get off track.

When it comes to hearing, the greatest way to “hear” is from the Word of God. You must take time daily to read and study it. Never take a verse out of context. Get a concordance or a Bible with cross references so you can see the “whole” picture. Then as you read, listen as Holy Spirit speaks to your own spirit through the Word.

EXHORTATION

I hear the Lord saying stay the course, stay the course. There are those that are wanting to change their course, but God is saying NO! Stay the course, there will be a time when things will take a different direction but now is not the time to make that move. If you do, it could be disastrous.

EXHORTATION

Today perhaps you’re feeling like giving up and that all hope is gone. In fact, it’s seeming to you as if everything in your life is just falling apart; But you hold on and don’t you dare think about giving up. For the truth of the matter is that somethings absolutely had to fall apart...So that better things could fall together for you. Yes, I’d say the time has come for you to rejoice and be exceedingly glad; Because you are indeed blessed and highly favored...And better days and better things are just ahead for you.
