Scottish Publishing Industry News
Hello

'Never cast a clout until May's oot'. Indeed! The hawthorn (may) flowers have been out for a while and the month is nearly at an end, but so far it has been cold and wet enough to break records. Just as well then that there have been lots of online events and great books to keep us occupied indoors.

We hope June will be hot and sunny but whether it is or not, you are warmly invited to join us at our Scottish Books Long Weekend from 10 to 13 June. There are 14 free events with something for everyone: storytelling and drawing for children, politics, fiction, non-fiction and publishing.

We also have our usual round up of publishing and book news, festivals and jobs.

Brian Hamill
Brian Hamill of The Common Breath
We are immensely saddened to hear the news about Brian Hamill of The Common Breath, one of our member publishers, who has passed away. Brian was a talented writer and editor, with a rapidly-growing reputation in literary publishing, producing fiction, prose anthologies and poetry, as well as garnering an audience through an active social media presence, with his passionate championing of writers. This is devastating news for his family and friends and we would like to extend our heartfelt sympathies to them at this very sad time.

Many of Brian's friends in the trade have paid tribute. For a selection, see Heloise Wood's article Trade pays tribute to 'kindest Scottish literature advocate' Brian Hamill in The Bookseller of 26 May 2021. See also Laura Waddell's column in The Scotsman of 27 May 2021 about Brian: Glasgow publisher Brian Hamill was a generous, kind-spirited soul who sent out sparks of inspiration.

BfS Issue Force of Nature
This month’s issue Force of Nature celebrates a wonderful, diverse range of nature titles. As we emerge from our homes and venture beyond our own streets to experience the outdoors, we become aware that nature plays an immense part in how we live our everyday lives – part of living fully in the world as well as being a precious resource for our wellbeing. Nature books – and the connections people have with the natural world – have become a publishing phenomenon.
Publishing Wales
Publishing Wales logo
A big welcome from Publishing Scotland to Publishing Wales.
