The Third Sunday of Lent.
March 12, 2023
Greetings!

This week's article is written by HS Staff Member, Jane Thompson.

When I went through the Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA) to become a Catholic, I was excited to know that at the Easter Vigil I would receive my sacraments and become a fully initiated member of the body of Christ. As my journey entered into Lent, I learned I would experience three rites called the Scrutinies. By definition, scrutiny means “critical observation or examination”. It is derived from the Latin scruta or scrutari and today we use it most often in regard to examining or searching for a mistake or failure. I began to wonder, “Wow, am I not good enough?” But here is what I experienced.

Weekday Mass: 8:30 AM

Saturday: Confession: 4:00 PM - 4:45 PM
Vigil Mass: 5:00 PM

Sunday Masses: 9:30am, 11:30am and 6:00pm

 Daylight Savings

Daylight Savings is this Sunday, March 12th. Make sure you "spring forward" an hour!

Friday, March 17, St. Patrick’s Day

The abstinence from meat on Fridays of Lent is a significant element of the penitential nature of this holy season.

This year, however, Friday of the Third Week of Lent (March 17) is an occasion for Saint Patrick’s Day celebration in a number of parishes or schools in our Diocese. Having judged that it would contribute to the spiritual good of the faithful, Bishop Cantú has granted to the faithful of the Diocese of San Jose, as well as to any visitors or travelers who may be physically present within the territory of this diocese, a dispensation from the obligation of abstinence from meat
on March 17, 2023.

Those taking advantage of the dispensation are encouraged to undertake a work of charity, an exercise of piety, or an act of penance on some other occasion during the Second Week of Lent.

Nicaragua Mission Trip 2023

We are so excited to have so many missionaries already registered to travel to Nicaragua on behalf of our parish this summer. There has been so much enthusiasm that we’ve decided to leave our registration open a little bit longer. Hopefully, this extra time will allow those of you who were waiting to finalize your summer plans to join us to work and serve alongside our friends in Nicaragua.

Registration is now open through Wednesday, March 22, 2023, or until we reach capacity.

The slides from the information meeting are available on the Mission Trip Webpage, and so is the registration link. For questions, please send an email to hs.amigos@yahoo.com.

BULLETIN BOARD
HELP TO HOUSE THE UNHOUSED OF SANTA CLARA COUNTY!

Since Village House suspended operations in March of 2020, the crisis surrounding the unhoused has only gotten worse. The need for housing continues to grow and our politicians, while they continue to make some progress, have not accomplished enough. We are facing a humanitarian and moral crisis in our county, one of the wealthiest in the world; we have the resources available to make a difference!

Villages of Hope Silicon Valley is an organization that is attempting to bring more pressure on politicians so that action may be taken. We are suggesting that the use of Emergency Sleeping Cabins (ESC) can be a short-term solution that
●    Will give safety and security to the unhoused.
●    Will provide stability and a formal address so that social services can more efficiently be delivered to those unhoused who are in need.
●    Will be more cost-effective than the ‘tiny houses’ developments that have been delivered in San Jose.
●    Will provide the stability for the unhoused so that they can do the work needed to move into more traditional housing.

Villages of Hope has a simple first step approach: contact the San Jose mayor and council people and tell them to take action. Our political leaders try to do their best but they must react when larger numbers of people tell them that action is needed. I attach a sample email that Villages of Hope is generating weekly that contains a standard message for the mayor and council members.

We need your help. The Village House was successful because it gave people a way to do something about this unhoused crisis.

We would ask that you consider the following:
●    Go to their website (http://www.vohsv.org/) and sign up as a supporting organization and as a supporting individual.
●    Contact friends and fellow parishioners and pass onto them this information about Villages of Hope, encouraging them to add their names as supporting individuals, to sign up to receive our newsletter and encouraging them to regularly contact their political leaders.
●    After signing up, weekly send email to Mayor, your District leaders
