AAVLD Program Chair and President-Elect Message

In less than two months, we will be in Nashville, TN for the AAVLD/USAHA Annual Meeting! Registration and room reservations are open so make sure you’re making your plans. AAVLD exists to support our members by providing the latest in scientific information, training and networking opportunities, and laboratory accreditation. The BEST place to find all of the people and information is at the annual meeting. The program committee has put together an outstanding program. Our Plenary Session and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion workshop are focused on developing strong diagnostic teams by discussing generational perspectives, communication, and conflict management.

The Accreditation Committee will again hold an accreditation and quality assurance symposium to help labs manage the accreditation process. We have symposia on next-generation sequencing, antimicrobial stewardship, and scientific writing. Our emerging issues seminar will focus on H5N1 in cattle, and we will have pathology symposia on dermatopathology, pig diseases, and fungi. You can also test your pathology skills at our Interpretative Pathology Mock Exam. We have over 100 talks in scientific sessions, and this year we’ve added a 3rd pathology session because of the quality of the work. I am excited to hear our speakers and poster presenters share their amazing work. We will have networking opportunities for everyone, including our New Member Orientation, Foundation Auction, Awards Luncheon, and President’s Dinner. But the best way to meet other members and learn about the work they’re doing is in our committee meetings, where everyone is welcome to attend. If you are new to AAVLD and the Annual Meeting, sign up for a Meeting Buddy to help you navigate the sessions and determine where to go based on your interest. And reach out to your Executive Board Members if you have any questions – we are here to help you! I look forward to seeing you all in Nashville!!

AAVLD Lab Technology and Virology Committees Hosted Summer Virtual Mini-Symposium

The AAVLD Lab Technology and Virology Committees co-hosted the Summer Virtual Mini-Symposium on 7/24/2024, which was well attended by 174 attendees across AAVLD laboratories.

The User Insights Unveiled: Real-world Perspectives on Liquid Handling Robots in Diagnostic Labs Symposium featured 10 speakers from AAVLD laboratories presenting their perspectives on the liquid handlers they utilized in their laboratories for molecular, serology, or next-generation sequencing workflows. This half-day event was geared toward laboratory staff that do not typically attend the annual AAVLD meeting, and provide the opportunity for laboratories to share valuable insights and learn from each other.

Feedback from the post-symposium survey was overwhelmingly positive and participants would like to see more of the similar events offered by AAVLD committees in the future.

Many thanks to the co-chairs Ailam Lim, Melanie Prarat Koscielny, Brandi Torrevillas and Roman Pogranichniy for organizing the event, and speakers Samuel Sterns, Duan Loy, Joanna Sawicki, Yung-Yi Mosley, Mani Lejeune, Deep Tewari, Rahul Nelli, Nicole Grosjean, Roman Pogranichniy and Brandi Torrevillas for their presentations.

Editor's Note:

Congratulations committee leaders for a successful virtual mini-symposium. Outstanding leadership! David H. Zeman, Executive Director

Retrospective review of the pathology of American pikas, Barrett et al.

Abstract. American pikas (Ochotona princeps) are small lagomorphs that live in mountainous talus areas of western North America. Studies on the histopathology of American pikas are limited. We summarize here the clinical histories, and gross and histologic findings of 12 American pikas, including 9 captive (wild-caught) and 3 wild animals. Death was often attributed to stress (transport, handling, anesthesia) with few-to-no premonitory clinical signs. Infection was the cause of death in 2 cases: 1 had bacterial pyogranulomatous dermatitis, cellulitis, and lymphadenitis with sepsis; the other case had oomycete-induced necrotizing colitis. Incidental parasitic infections included sarcocystosis, nematodosis (oxyurids), and ectoparasitism. Most animals with adequate nutritional status had periportal hepatic lipidosis; this finding was absent in all animals with adipose atrophy, and it is possible that periportal hepatic lipidosis is non-pathologic in American pikas. In Memory of

Albrecht Konrad Eugster

December 10, 1938 – July 21, 2024

Full obituary

Dear AAVLD Family.

We recently lost Dr. Konrad Eugster. AAVLD members were blessed with Konrad's dedicated and able leadership as he served as our President in 1988. He was awarded the AAVLD's highest honor (the EP Pope Memorial Award) in 1994. He was a skilled leader, a dedicated diagnostic scientist, and a valued friend and colleague to many. May he rest in peace.

David H. Zeman, DVM, PhD, DACVP Executive Director, AAVLD

Interstitial lung diseases frequently represent a diagnostic challenge for veterinary diagnosticians. This challenge can be identified at all stages of diagnosis, particularly with gross and histologic interpretation. Moreover, each animal species varies in pulmonary physiology, pathology, and frequency of different diseases, which add more layers of complexity to this already difficult pattern. We aim to expand our knowledge of this intricate pattern to better investigate our lung submissions, describe lesions, and finally diagnose interstitial lung diseases.

We are inviting submissions to a JVDI special section on Interstitial lung disease in domestic animals to be guest edited by Dr. Francisco R. Carvallo, Virginia Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, Virginia Tech, and Dr. Jeff Caswell, Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph.

If you are interested, please submit an abstract of up to 250 words describing your proposed topic by September 30, 2024.

Primary research papers, case series, and reviews of a focused topic will be considered, as will single-animal case reports if they are novel and include a review of the literature on the focused topic of the report. For abstracts on topics considered suitable for the special issue, authors will be notified by October 30, 2024, and full submissions will be expected by April 30, 2025. Submitted manuscripts will proceed through the usual JVDI peer-review and editorial processes, with publications expected in the fall of 2025. Page charges of $75/printed page will apply - there is no color page charge for online-only publications.

Please submit your abstract to guest editor Dr. Francisco R. Carvallo, fcarvallo@vt.edu
