Flowers Cup Arrangement Workshop

Thursday, July 21 - 7:00 pm

Windmore Foundation for the Arts office

303 S. Main Street, Culpeper

SOLD OUT

(thank you to everyone who responded...we hope to be able to offer it again soon)

In this 1-hour class, people can learn how to make something beautiful in just minutes that will brighten someone's day and maybe give them a lift. It also provides encouragement to be on the lookout for free wildflowers that in the right setting can really show off. Everyone will be provided enough flowers and supplies to be able to make at least one flower cup and enough supplies to make 10 more at home.

The class is free of charge, but the class is limited to 15 people.

Robert Legge was former proprietor of Sweet Land Farm, that made dried flower wreaths and arrangements for mail order catalogs such as Plow and Hearth, Monticello, and Faith Mountain. He's always liked to grow and give away fresh flowers, especially to people who aren't expecting it. Robert lives in a postage stamp front yard but last year grew enough flowers to distribute 700 small flower cup arrangements for people in nursing homes, hospitals, schools, senior centers, etc. All for about 15 cents each.

Scholarship Awards

This year's recipients of the Windmore Foundation for the Arts Scholarships in Honor of Artists Dorothy Skelton and Millie Lane were at the Windmore General Membership meeting on June 23rd to share their artistic talents with those in attendance.

Ksusha Billings graduated from Liberty High School in Fauquier County. She plans to attend West Virginia University where she will major in Music Education. Ksusha plays the French horn, among other things, and delighted those in attendance with her talent.

Olivia Stith is also a recent graduate of Liberty High School in Fauquier County. She plans to attend Virginia Commonwealth University to earn her BA in Music.  Olivia is a talented vocalist who has also arranged music. She enchanted all who attended the general membership meeting with her beautiful soprano voice.

Windmore Foundation for the Arts is honored to be able to offer the Dorothy Skelton and Millie Lane scholarships to support funded through sales of arts bequeathed to Windmore for that purpose, as well as through the generous donations of supporters of the scholarship program.

Piedmont Community Band

The Piedmont Community Band ended the spring season on a high note… literally! After a fun and entertaining concert featuring film music on June 12 and an appearance at the CARS car show on Independence Day, the band is taking a well-deserved break for the summer.

We will resume rehearsals on September 11 at Culpeper Baptist Church and look forward to another season bringing music to the community.

Pen-to-Paper

Pen-to-Paper met at Culpeper Public Library on July 5th. We had different stories related to the prompts. It is surprising how many ways you can think about the word "Marinate." We had some very clever writers who made the group laugh and that is so necessary in today's world.

The other prompts were "Dance," and "July." One writer even incorporated all three prompts into one story and accomplished it by writing 500 words or less!

The prompts for next month are:

1. If I could write a letter to my younger self

or

2. Stuck on the elevator

We will have a meeting on Tuesday August 2, 2022 at 10 A.M. until 12 noon and again at 5 P.M. in the conference room of the Culpeper County Library. Writers of all ages and abilities are welcome to come to the meeting.

We are also going to publish and anthology this year. We have submissions but we can accommodate more. Any Windmore member can submit a story or a poem for consideration in the anthology.

Please email: Pen-to-Paper@windmorefoundation.org with any questions

Publishing Group

The Windmore Publishing Discussion Group met on July 12. Maria Basileo, editor of the Culpeper Times, and Lori Payne, founder of Payne & Ink Creations, were the guest speakers.

Maria Basileo invited the group to interview and write feature stories for FACES of Culpeper, a yearly magazine highlighting area business owners. FACES  is seeking 500 to 550 word stories about selected business owners, including  quotes, origin of the business and unique stories.  FACES is published in December of each year in association with the Virginia Press Association.

Lori Payne, founder and graphic artist of Payne & Ink Creations, explained the steps involved in taking a manuscript from computer printout to a finished book using Amazon's KDP.  Self publishing has been the subject of many previous meetings, and Lori answered member questions and showed six of the books she designed for one of the members.

Members were also urged to check out library copies of books from the local authors shelf.

The next meeting of the Publishing Discussion Group will be August 9 at 10:15 a.m. in the conference room of the Culpeper Library.  Visitors are welcome.
