President’s Points of Pride
Please indulge me as I continue to marvel at the remarkable job performance of our Shepherd recruitment team. The fall application numbers continue to remain strong—with a 65% increase over this time last year (69% increase in first-year applications and a 20% increase in transfer applications). Our in-state, first-year applications have increased by nearly 96%! Web traffic is also up 14.5% over this time last year (September 1-November 9). The Admissions staff is wrapping up a successful fall travel season with off-campus visits. This season, they will have traveled to 200+ high schools and 73 college fairs. We are indebted to the Enrollment Management, Marketing, and Admissions teams for their collective efforts to advance student recruitment. Thank you to everyone involved—our staff, faculty, and students!

Criminal justice reform documentary and discussion set for November 17
The Bonnie and Bill Stubblefield Institute for Civil Political Communications is hosting its first in-person event since the beginning of the pandemic: “The First Step” on Wednesday, November 17, at 6 p.m. in the Frank Arts Center Theater. This documentary, which debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year, follows activist and political commentator Van Jones as he works on landmark criminal justice reform and a more humane response to the addiction crisis. Attempting to be a bridge-builder in a time of extreme polarization takes him deep into the inner workings of a divisive administration, internal debates within both parties, and the lives of front-line activists fighting for their communities. After the film, the audience will have the opportunity to discuss the film with several people involved in making it, including Doug Copenhaver, Pete White, Louis Reed, and producers Brandon and Lance Kramer. The event is free, but registration is required.
