CBD Citrus Bitters Recipe
By Billee Sharp
Bitters are usually associated with alcoholic cocktails but they also make a delicious non-alcoholic tipple, with many health benefits. Composed of peels, roots, aromatic spice, herbs and flowers, bitters stimulate our digestion and ease gas, bloating and indigestion. The bitter component needed for a healthy constitution is sadly lacking in our modern diet, so here is our easy bitters recipe, enhanced with CBD tincture for extra benefits.
This is a simple bitters recipe for novices, the basic instructions can be altered to accommodate any combination of ingredients that you fancy!
I’ve chosen to use apple cider vinegar instead of high percent alcohol here but you can use alcohol if you prefer.
You’ll need minimal equipment for this recipe: a large glass jar with lid, sterilized bottles for storage, muslin or cheesecloth for straining.
Ingredients
14 grams / ½ oz orange/lemon/lime/grapefruit peel- (choose one or use a mix of two or more)
Prepare the peel by drying the zested strips in an oven on the lowest heat setting or alternatively just add to the mixture raw, it’s a matter of personal choice.
14 grams / ½ oz ginger root, turmeric root, liquorice root, dandelion root - use one or more, roughly chop the root.
1 teaspoon of aromatics: choose from cinnamon, ground ginger, nutmeg, cloves, coriander seeds, peppercorns, coffee beans or a mixture.
2 tablespoons dried herbs: choose from lavender, chamomile, sage, mint, rose, thyme , add one or more
15 ml alcohol-based CBD tincture
6-8 fl oz Apple cider vinegar
Combine all the ingredients in the large glass jar, then pour over the apple cider vinegar and the CBD tincture, screw the lid on tightly, give the jar a good shake every day and store in a cool, shady spot. Remember to label your jar with ingredients and the date you made it.
After 21 days, strain the liquid through muslin or cheesecloth into sterilized bottles, use a pipette to add bitters to the beverage of your choice.
