Write GOTV Postcards LETTERS with NCJW
Wednesday, July 20, 2-3:30 pm, Long Beach
There is still space at the Postcard-Writing Party on Wednesday July 20th, 2 – 3:30 pm, at the home of a member in Long Beach.

Postcards, instructions and all materials will be provided for you. If you’d like to join us, email us by Monday, July 18th at advocacy@ncjwlongbeach.org.

Can’t make it that day?  We are having a Vote Forward Letter Writing Party on Monday, August 8th, 2 – 3:30 pm at a member’s home in Long Beach. We are writing non-partisan letters as part of Vote Forward’s THE BIG SEND. The letters are being written now for mailing in October. Vote Forward’s letter writing campaigns are designed to reach voters in the congressional districts and states where boosting turnout will have the biggest impact on election outcomes, with a particular focus on reaching historically underrepresented voters in Black, Asian, Latino, and Native American communities.
If you have already participated in Vote Forward, you know the drill, log in at https://votefwd.org and pick the “social” campaign marked with an "S".

If you have not participated but would like to do so, please email advocacy@ncjwlongbeach.org and we will get you set up.

We can only accommodate 12 people, so please RSVP as soon as possible. We will provide envelopes and stamps and letters if you can’t print them. RSVP to Co-VP Advocacy Deb Lelchuk at advocacy@ncjwlongbeach.org.

Hope to see you on August 8th!

Free Screening of Still Working 9 to 5
Thursday, July 21, 6:30 pm, Long Beach Art Theatre
IT’S MORE THAN A MOVIE, IT’S A MOVEMENT! Join Sponsor Wild West Women, Inc and Long Beach Councilwoman Cindy Allen for a free screening of Still Working 9 to 5, a feature-length documentary, Thursday, July 21, 6:30 PM  at the Long Beach Art Theatre, at Fourth & Cherry.

There will be treats provided by Willmore Baking Company and a Q&A with Filmmakers, Camille Harden, Gary Lane and Larry Lane.

When the highest-grossing comedy, “9 to 5,” starring Jane Fonda, Dolly Parton, Dabney Coleman and Lily Tomlin, exploded on the cinema screens in 1980, the laughs hid a serious message about women in the office. “Still Working 9 to 5” explores why workplace inequality 40 years later was never a laughing matter.

Along with the stars and movie makers, the activists who do the hard work to advance women at all levels in the workplace are interviewed. Members of the original 9 to 5, National Association of Working Women and Feminist advocates talk about their lives, work and persistent drive for closing the wage gap and improving workplace conditions; featuring Ellen Cassedy, Lilly Ledbetter and Zoe Nicholson.

Hear the new “9 to 5” duet with Dolly Parton and Kelly Clarkson!

We won in Arizona!

Mazel tov to NCJW Arizona who sued the state of Arizona and won. Arizona wanted to classify fetuses, embryos, and fertilized eggs with personhood status, which could have been used to criminalize people having abortions, or to ban in vitro fertilization (IVF) and egg freezing, and more. But alongside our partners, we sued and we won! The state law is now temporarily blocked. This helps prioritize the life and wellbeing of the pregnant person and sets the critical groundwork for more wins in the future.

These wins are powered by NCJW supporters like you!

We’re not stopping there. In states across the country, National Council of Jewish Women Sections and advocates are fighting back to ensure everyone can access the abortion care they need, when they need it—quickly, safely, and with dignity.

Whether submitting amicus briefs or lawsuits to stop harmful laws from going into effect, NCJW is on the front lines for abortion access. Your support will help NCJW continue this vital work.

For 129 years, we have been creating change. Today is no exception. But we can't do it without you. Together, we will continue to fight for abortion justice.

There is still time to sign up for Abortion Access Front’s Operation Save Abortion training, an all-day virtual training on abortion activism, this Sunday, July 17 at 8:00am PT. (Make sure to add your affiliation with NCJW when registering.)

Sunday, August 7, 2 pm, Temple Beth El
Please join OCJCR on Sunday, August 7 at 2 pm for their annual Tisha b’Av program at Temple Beth El in South Orange County.

As we reflect on the losses Jews have suffered as a persecuted and displaced people many times over, we honor our obligation to help and connect with people who suffer these tragic losses today and are seeking refuge at our borders. Join us for an introspective program to mourn and to heed the call to ‘welcome the stranger.’

About Tisha b’Av: Tisha b-Av is an annual day of remembrance for Jewish people to recall the events that led to the destruction of the First and Second temples in Jerusalem and cast Jews out of their homes to become refugees. It falls on the 9th day of the month of Av, or Tisha b’Av. Click here for a list of additional tragic events that fell on Tisha b’Av over the centuries.
