Empty Bottle String Band
In concert Friday, March 24th, 7:30 pm
Christ Church Parish Hall, Chaptico MD
Southern Maryland Traditional Music and Dance proudly presents the Empty Bottle String Band, in concert on Friday, March 24th at Christ Church Parish Hall, 37497 Zack Fowler Rd, Chaptico, MD 20621.
Doors open at 7:00 pm, and music starts at 7:30 pm. The Empty Bottle String Band is one of the finest string bands on the East coast. Hailing from Eastern Tennessee, the band specializes in playing toe-tapping, highly danceable traditional Appalachian music. They are known for their upbeat tunes and feel-good music. Their impressive stage presence is coupled with a delightfully self-effacing strength and confidence in their music. Their sound is inventive, while still staying close to the old time string band tradition of the 1930's. They have become a festival favorite wherever they go and are one of the Appalachian region’s most popular old-time groups.
The Empty Bottle String Band trio (Kristal Harman - guitar and vocals, Tyler Hughes - banjo/banjo uke and vocals, and Stephanie Jeter - autoharp/bass and vocals) will be accompanied by fiddler Phil Jones. Check out their website, social media accounts, and bios all linked on the SMTMD Concerts Page.
Don’t forget to buy your tickets: $15 for SMTMD members and $20 for non-members. Advance ticket sales through TicketLeap, or by credit card, cash, check, Zelle, or Venmo at the door. As a reminder, SMTMD is a 501 (c)(3) organization. SMTMD is grateful to our sponsor, The Inn at Leonardtown, for their generous support of this concert. Once Upon a Mattress
March 10 to April 2, 2023
Book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller, & Marshall Barer
Music by Mary Rodgers
Lyrics by Marshall Barer
Producer Debbie Gilley
Asst. Producer Michael Beyrle
Directors Heather Bauer & Kaitelyn Bauer Dieguez
Music Director Peter Ullmann
Choreographer Randy Tusing
(Musical Comedy) Many moons ago in a far-off place, Queen Aggravain decreed no couples could marry until her son, Prince Dauntless, found a bride. Princesses came from far and wide to win the hand of the prince, but none could pass the impossible tests given to them by the Queen. That is, until the "shy" swamp princess, Winnifred the Woebegone, showed up. Would she be able to pass the Sensitivity Test, marry her prince and help Lady Larkin and Sir Harry to the altar? Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the classic tale The Princess and the Pea provides some side-splitting shenanigans. After all, a princess is a delicate thing.

March 2023 Notable Author:
Charles Constantine Pise
| |
Charles Constantine Pise, born November 22, 1801, in Annapolis, Maryland, was an American priest and writer who became the only Roman Catholic United States Senate Chaplain and the first American to be ‘knighted’ by the Pope. He was the son of an old Philadelphia family which meant they had the money to send him to Georgetown College in Washington, D.C., and then to Rome, Italy for his education. There he became a Jesuit. He returned from Rome at the news of the death of his father and at the same time left the Jesuits. He taught at Mount St. Mary's College and Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland and continued there after his ordination 1825.
He immediately distinguished himself as a talented writer, lecturer, and preacher and was asked to become an assistant at St. Patrick's Church in Washington, DC, where he drew the attention of both President John Tyler and Senator Henry Clay. Clay was so impressed by Pise’s spiritual thought and wisdom that he arranged for Pise to be appointed Chaplain of the Senate from 1832-33.
Pise wrote several works in prose and verse, including three Catholic devotional novels and one semi-fictional work, Letters to Ada. Versatile in the literary arts, Pise also published a five-volume History of the Church from Its Establishment to the Present Century (i.e. 1700’s). Pope Gregory XVI considered the work so valuable to the Church that he made Pise a knight of the Sacred Palace and Count Palatine. He was also granted a Doctor of Divinity degree and further honored as knight of the Holy Roman Empire.
After serving at St Patrick’s, Washington, Pise was asked to serve at St. Patrick’s in New York City and finally assigned as rector to Saint Charles Borromeo Church in Brooklyn, New York, where he finished his career and died on May 26, 1866.

Maryland Traditions, the traditional arts program of the Maryland State Arts Council, has announced the winners of its 2023 Heritage Awards. The awards recognize long-term achievement in the traditional arts, and nominations are accepted in three categories: Person or People, Place, and Tradition. Six awards are given this year, each featuring a $10,000 grant.
The awardees are:
-
Michael Friend (Montgomery County) is a performer and respected percussionist in a variety of African-American, West African, and Latin American percussion traditions. Since he founded the Soul In Motion Players in 1984, Michael has led the ensemble in presenting African dance and drum performances around the world. (Person or People award category.)
-
Linda Goss (Baltimore City) is a sixth-generation storyteller, educator, poet, and author. A 2019 NEA National Heritage Fellow and acclaimed performer, Mama Linda co-founded the National Association of Black Storytellers in 1983 to support the history, heritage, and culture of African Americans. (Person or People award category.)
-
Gertie Hurley (Prince George’s County) has been making dolls for over 80 years. Nationally recognized in the tradition of Black doll-making, Gertie uses her dolls and the children’s books she writes featuring them as teaching aids to promote personal and community health and wellness. (Person or People award category.)
-
Pianist and fiddler Donna Long (Baltimore County) is a pillar of Irish traditional music in Maryland and around the world. A former member of the internationally-acclaimed ensemble Cherish the Ladies, she is featured on numerous recordings and her piano arrangements are included in the performance curriculum at Ireland’s University of Limerick. (Person or People award category.)
-
Located on the site of a former segregated school, the Kennard African American Cultural Heritage Center (Queen Anne’s County) now combines a community center and museum, chronicling local African American life and culture through its African American History Museum. A space for community gathering, the Center also offers education, scholarships, and mentoring for Queen Anne’s County residents of all ages. (Place award category.)
-
Created in the 1840s, the Baltimore Album Quilts (Baltimore City) tradition continues to thrive in an ever-increasing local and international community of quilters. Taking designs appliqued onto cloth squares, quilters piece together quilts that document the cultural stories of their everyday lives. (Tradition award category.)
Maryland Traditions has offered Heritage Awards annually since 2007 in honor of Dr. Alta Schrock, a Garrett County community leader who taught biology at Frostburg State University and founded groups, events, and publications to support traditional arts in Appalachian Maryland and beyond. Dr. Schrock’s legacy and work are a continuing source of inspiration for the Heritage Awards today.
The Maryland State Arts Council is committed to making sure all Marylanders can access its programs and services. Guests with further accessibility questions or who require accommodations may fill out the Accommodations Request Form or contact the
