The Nonprofit Connection
Email Header for handsOn Constant Contact
Greetings!

Greetings! Spring is a time of renewal and growth, which is exactly what we need during these uncertain times. When I reflect back on when I first connected with HandsOn NWNC, I was entering into a professional renewal of my own as I transitioned into the field of fundraising from the legal field. HandsOn NWNC provided me with all of the tools necessary to successfully enter into the profession.

As a fundraising professional, I have benefited from the services that HandsOn offers from the great networking opportunities to the great resources and trainings provided. As a board member, I wanted to give back to an organization that has given so much to me throughout my professional career.

HandsOn NWNC is always evolving and looks at different ways to engage with the community in a meaningful way. As an example, be sure to save the date for the virtual Governor’s Awards Live Event on May 6th! More details will be in the April newsletter. Sponsorships for the Governor’s Awards—both of the event and in honor of individual nominees---are still available. We look forward to sharing the stories of these excellent nominees with all of you soon.

I also want to encourage organizations that are located in or serve Lewisville/Clemmons to consider applying for FREE spots in our organizational assessment program, as a way to start thinking about what your “better normal” can be post-COVID! In addition, we still have spots available in our Volunteer Management Training Series class, which starts on March 12th. Lastly, the next BIPOC Nonprofit ED Roundtable will be held on March 26th at Noon. The group will be spending time planning for what the rest of 2021 can be for the group, so I hope you will make plans to join them.

In conclusion, as we spring forward we can reflect back on the progress and purposeful growth that we have achieved as a community. HandsOn NWNC is here to provide the services and resources needed to continue that growth within the nonprofit sector and our community at large.

Sincerely,
Tamisha Keith
Director of Gift Planning
North Carolina A&T State University
HandsOn NWNC Board Member and
Women's Emerging Leaders Alumnae

Ed note: Tamisha has been a great presence on our board, and it was her ideas that helped bring the ED Roundtable into being! If you're interested in serving on a local board, you can check out current openings on GetConnected or sign up for Project Blueprint. Do you want to share your love of HandsOn with our network in a guest column in the future? Then please let Amy know!

Location: Zoom (the link will the same for the entire series)

For years, we've been happy to offer the Volunteer Management Training Series (VMTS,) developed by Points of Light and its Global affiliate network. For the past six months, Amy has been working with a team of her network peers to update and expand the series. We're excited to offer this new, revamped, virtual version virtually this March, which will incorporate the core six, half-day sessions and a completely new seventh session on Creating Equitable Environments for Volunteers. Together, these sessions provide a comprehensive understanding of the "nuts and bolts" of running a COVID-informed, equity-infused volunteer program. Volunteer administrators and anyone who has responsibility for recruiting, coordinating, or managing volunteers will benefit from the interactive curriculum, which is based on the latest research and best practices in the industry.

Topics covered include recent trends in volunteering, building an equity-infused, volunteer-focused culture, designing appropriate volunteer opportunities (even COVID-appropriate ones,) risk management practices, making and managing effective volunteer matches, recruiting and engaging volunteers (even during a pandemic,) developing effective training approaches for volunteers, and evaluating and sharing the impact of your volunteer program.

While we know that seven session is *a lot*, we also know how valuable it is to learn from the peer cohort in the class--which is difficult if the participants are constantly changing. Since this is the first time we'll be offering this revamped version, we're requesting participants to sign up for the entire series. HOWEVER--sessions will be recorded, and you are welcome to send someone else from your organization if a single person can't attend all seven sessions in real time.

VMTS is co-facilitated by Dr. Sharee Fowler, an Assistant Professor and Director of Salem College's Nonprofit Management and Community Leadership Program, and Amy Lytle, HandsOn NWNC's Executive Director. This year, we'll also be welcoming Vanessa Miller, CAVNC, the Marketing Services Manager at Goodwill Industries of NWNC, and the current President of the Piedmont Regional Association for Volunteer Administrators (PRAVA,) as a co-facilitator, and co-creator of the new module. Together, they have decades of real-world experience in mobilizing and managing volunteer programs in a diversity of settings.

Here are just some of the things our participants have shared about the VMTS experience: "Great online activities...lend to real life application." "The group discussions/breakout groups helped to understand the material better." "The content and the way in which concepts were presented was extremely helpful." " [The best part was] hearing solutions that others have found to volunteering during a pandemic." "The breakout sessions and being able to talk to people that relate to your position was really beneficial."

Cost for the Full Series: $225 for Supporting Partners, $275 for all others

2020-2021 Nonprofit Essentials:
Collaboration
TWO PARTS:
Thursday, March 18, 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm
AND
Thursday, March 25, 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm
Location: Zoom
NOTE REVISED TIME!!

Even though we remain socially distanced, our organizations still need to work together. Does your nonprofit need to do true, deep collaborative work with other organizations? The kind that moves from talk, to action, to measurable results? Then this session is for you! In this highly interactive, energetic, and--dare we say--FUN workshop,  you will get the opportunity to explore specific skills and tools that will help you create and sustain powerful, effective partnerships.

Always one of our favorite Nonprofit Essentials offerings, this session was one of our few casualties of 2020, scheduled just a few days after the #quarantimes began. If you were scheduled to take the class last year, we hope you will join us for this year's session (please send Kathy an email, so she can send you the link.) With a year to plan how to present our Collaboration session in a virtual space, we know that this session will be as compelling and informative as its in-person counterpart.

The class is taught by Dr. Sharee Fowler, an Assistant Professor and Director of Salem College's Nonprofit Management and Community Leadership Program, and one of HandsOn's longest collaborative partners. Prior to joining the Salem faculty, Dr. Fowler served as the Partnership Director for The Forsyth Promise, a community-wide cradle to career education initiative. She also has held positions as an Associate Organizer for CHANGE, a nonpartisan, multi-racial, multi-faith community organizing group and as a victim advocate, community educator, and the founding coordinator of the Domestic Violence Community Council at Family Services. In addition to her work at Salem College, Dr. Fowler is a Courage & Renewal Facilitator in Preparation and currently co-facilitates a monthly Circle of Trust© for individuals working in the nonprofit and public sectors in her local community. She serves as the President of the Holly Avenue Neighborhood Association and on the Board of Directors for Triad Restorative Justice.

Program evaluation--you know you love it!! :) Program evaluation is not just for grant applications and reports, but a key process to ensure that your organization is spending precious and limited resources in the most effective and efficient way. This month, we're offering an advanced session for those that have already taken this class, or for others who want to take their program evaluation skills to the next level.

Our Essentials of Program Evaluation--held on consecutive Wednesdays--is an interactive, engaging class (no, it is!!) that explores different evaluation models and lead you through the process of designing an approach to measure programs, create meaningful measures, collect and analyze data, generate a report, and communicate results to document impact, improve services, and support fundraising efforts.

The Advanced Program Evaluation class--held on consecutive Thursdays--recognizes the varied and complex ways that evaluation can be approached within nonprofits. If you’ve explored or even practiced evaluation already, go a step deeper with this class. Come with a program in mind that would benefit from a new or improved evaluation strategy! Leave with stronger evaluative thinking skills, practical tools you can use, and concrete ideas for improvement.

Both sessions will be led by Lori Fuller. After more than 20 years at the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust, focused on evaluation and learning, Lori launched Fuller Impact, a consulting firm to support nonprofits and foundations. She brings her realistic optimism--her head and her heart--to helping groups make their thinking visible, deepen their strategy, and improve their implementation in order to amplify their impact. Her combination of knowledge and skills are unique, and her approach is flexible. Lori is a Truman Scholar, a national program for those headed towards a career in public service, and has an MSW from the University of North Carolina as well as an MBA from Wake Forest University. Lori is also a certified master practitioner in Emergent Learning through Fourth Quadrant Partners.

VMTS Supplement:
Creating Equitable Environments for Volunteers
Friday, April 23rd, 9:00 am to 11:30 am
Location: Zoom

Based on extensive research gathered over the past two years, we've developed this volunteer management training session to help organizations find ways to help ensure that their volunteer programs are equity-infused and welcoming to all. The course will provide interactive activities that will allow participants to start putting the ideas included in their research into action within volunteer programs. Participants will explore why such work is necessary, be able to articulate the benefits of creating a culture of belonging within their program, examine various methods for building equitable environments, and be provided with further resource to support them in this journey.

Offered in March as a "bonus", seventh session as part of our Volunteer Management Training Series, we're offering it again in April as a stand-alone class for those who are specifically interested in this topic. The session will be co-facilitated by: Amy Lytle, HandsOn's Executive Director; Dr. Sharee Fowler, Salem College professor; and Vanessa Miller, CAVNC, Marketing Services Manager for Goodwill Industries of NWNC, and current President of the Piedmont Regional Association of Volunteer Administrators.

Cost: $45 for Supporting Partners, $55 for all others

SAVE THE DATE!
Forsyth County Governor's Volunteer Service Awards, May 6!
As with all aspects of our lives and work over the past year our 2021 Governor's Volunteer Service Awards will continue to look different this year due to the impact of COVID-19 on our ability to gather in person for a breakfast. But we are still planning on recognizing and celebrating the two dozen amazing volunteers that YOU nominated for these awards during a LIVE, VIRTUAL EVENT on May 6th!

Last year, our virtual recognition engaged more than 2,000 people with our nominees and their stories!! Sharing the feel-good stories of how volunteers have stepped up to serve our neighbors in need is vitally important this year, perhaps more than ever. In addition to the live event, we'll also be spotlighting the nominees, one per day, in the weeks leading up to May 6th. More details about this event will be included in our April newsletter (we promise it will be short and sweet!) In addition, you'll be able to once again vote for your favorite nominee during the People's Choice Award voting period that will begin March 22nd at journalnow.com.

However, we can't continue to give out these awards without your support. Sponsors are still needed to help make even this virtual recognition happen. Event, "table" sponsorship, and individual sponsorships are all still available. With the wide reach our virtual event enjoyed last year, sponsorship is still a great way to show your support of the vital services that volunteers have continued to provide to our community throughout 2020! Individual sponsorship--the equivalent of purchasing an individual "ticket" to our traditional breakfast-- can be provided in honor of a specific nominee as a way of recognizing their dedication.

Training Opportunities
"Retaining Volunteers Amid Uncertainty: Converting One-Timers to Repeat Volunteers," a Sterling Volunteers webinar, Thursday, March 11th, 2 pm, FREE! Presented by Beth Steinhorn, President of VQ Volunteer Strategies, to explore changing definitions of retention and deep dive into feature case studies that highlight organizations who effectively inspire first-timers to return again and again. Although volunteer rates are rising, individuals are less likely to make long term commitments, especially in a world of uncertainties. Yet, certain best practices can help transform episodic volunteers into repeat volunteers so that you not only deliver valued services but also connect participants to future opportunities for impactful volunteering. Can't make it on the 11th? No worries, just register online and they'll send you the recording to watch later.
"Nonprofit Financial Strategy in Response to Crisis," a NC Center for Nonprofits webinar, Friday, March 12th, 1 pm to 3 pm, $50 The pandemic has disrupted nonprofits’ operations and funding sources, with longer-term impacts that still remain unknown. If you want to hear more from legislators themselves, join the Center again on March 19th at 9:30 am. A bipartisan panel of state legislators will discuss state policy priorities in 2021 and give a preview of the process for developing the state budget. Become a Vaccine Ambassador! Hopefully, many more of our nonprofit partners' volunteers and staff will become eligible for the vaccine in the coming weeks, as the state moves deeper into Stage 3. As with the Census, nonprofits have a crucial role to play as a "trusted ambassador" within the communities we serve. To help prepare us for this role, the NC Department of Health and Human Services is offering training to people and organizations that are willing and able to educate diverse community groups about the benefits of COVID-19 vaccination. Remember, the quicker we get reliable information out to our stakeholders, the faster our community can gain control over the pandemic. Click here to learn more and register online.

HANDSON NWNC IN THE NEWS!
HandsOn NWNC New Board Member and YEC Co-Founder Becomes Eagle Scout!

We were all excited to see Sarina Horner, a co-founder of the Forsyth County Young Leaders Program, one of our collaborative partners in the Youth Engagement Coalition, a 2021 Governor's Volunteer Service Award winner, AND a newly-minted HandsOn board member, featured on WXII last month as one of the first females to earn an Eagle Scout award in our area. Her project was to design, build, and install a large trail marker sign at Reynolda Gardens. As always, we are impressed by Sarina's enthusiasm and leadership, and still don't understand how she has time to sleep! We are honored to have Sarina on our team.

Play BE KIND Bingo and
Earn Prizes!

Our friends at Cabot Creamery, whom have long supported volunteering, are celebrating National Random Acts of Kindness Day by challenging all of us to play BE KIND Bingo! And it's so easy and fun to do, we thought you might want to share this great activity with your staff, board, and volunteers. Here's how to play:

  • Screenshot their 'Random Acts of Kindness' Bingo Board (left)

  • X all the ways you’ve shown kindness this year

  • Post the board to your Facebook & Instagram stories and tag @cabotcheese before 3/15 and 10 people will be randomly selected to win a $25 Cabot gift box!

If you do this with your team, be sure that they tag your organization in their posts as well. You could add other organizational-specific prizes as further incentives, too. Have fun and be kind!
NEWS FROM AROUND OUR NETWORK!
Wake Forest University Colleagues Honored with Two Different NC Campus Compact Awards!

HandsOn's partnership with what is now WFU's Office of Civic and Community Engagement (OCCE) is long and deep, stretching back to nearly the founding of HandsOn. So we were honored to be asked to write a letter of support for the nomination of Steve Virgil, J.D., executive director of experiential education and clinical professor of law, for NC Campus Compact's Engaged Faculty Award. After all, without Steve's support, our Nonprofit Essentials program would not exist! We were especially pleased when, in announcing the awards during the 2021 PACE Conference, the presenter directly quoted portions of HandsOn's nomination letter.

We were also surprised and delighted to learn last month that not only had Steve won this award, but that our dear colleague, Marianne Magjuka, Ed.D., assistant dean and executive director of OCCE, would also be recognized at their conference. Marianne was recognized as the Civic Engagement Professional of the Year. It marks the first time that one institution has claimed both awards in the same year.

You can learn more about these well-deserved awards and the winners' impressive accomplishments here, and watch the presentation celebration on YouTube. Congratulations to you both, and we look forward to continuing to work with you for many years to come!
Casey Raymer Takes New Role with Kaleideum!

We were so excited to see Casey Raymer named as Director of Annual Giving for Kaleideum last month. Casey, formerly with ABC of NC, a HandsOn Supporting Partner, has been in our network for many years, and we're so proud of her as a graduate of our Women's Emerging Leaders program. We were especially honored that she included that fact in the news stories about her new appointment. :) Congratulations, Casey, and we look forward to continuing to work with you in your new role!
