December Volunteer Spotlight
December Spotlight is.....Sam Keegan!!

How did you become involved with SMILES, and how long have you been volunteering?

My boyfriend saw a post on Facebooking for SMILES and he showed me knowing I would be interested. So far I have only been involved with smiles for one session. So about 9 weeks.

Where did you grow up?

I was born in Elkhorn and lived there till I was 7, then I moved to Florida by Ocala where I lived most my life and I moved back to Whitewater in 2017.

Who is your favorite horse at SMILES and why?

My favorite horse at smiles is Holly. She is my favorite because she is very sweet but also challenging. She has an attitude which I love. Not to mention she is tall and beautiful. The red roan color is one of my favorites. However, once Chaps is introduced to the program he might take the spot as my favorite because of how sweet he is.
If you were gifted a million dollars, what would you do with it?

If I was gifted a million dollars I would pay off my student loans, and put money away for graduate school. I would also put money aside for a house with land by the graduate school I get accepted to. I would also make a large donation to SMILES for anything that might be needed. (I might also use some of the money to purchase Holly).

What is something you like to do in December?

I am not a big Christmas person so I always work Christmas and Christmas Eve but my birthday is December 21st so I enjoy spending that day with my boyfriend. I do however love making gifts for people.

What do you enjoy about volunteering at SMILES?

Really there is nothing I don't like about volunteering. I love grooming the horses and working with the clients and getting to know everyone. The only thing that would make it any better is if there was a paid position so I could be there full time.
Is there anything else you'd like your fellow volunteers to know?

I really appreciate the opportunity to work with everyone. I have hopes to open my own equine center one day and I hope that my facility can be as great as SMILES is. I hope to expand on what is currently done with equine therapy and help people that have also been through trauma. I am a huge believer that different types of therapy can be helpful in many more ways than they currently are and I am so grateful for all of the conversations I have had at SMILES with volunteers, instructors and clients that are helping to shape the way I plan on setting up my career in the future.
