My first "art material" was a Number Two Ticonderoga pencil! I drew everything with those pencils. Their website describes them as "The World's Best Pencil" and I must say that I agree with them.
In college, my favorite drawing tool was charcoal. I enjoyed being able to draw with more expressive gestures, smudge the charcoal with my fingers and get those deep blacks that I could not get from my Number Two pencil.
I teach charcoal drawing with undraped and costumed models - adding pastels to give me the lightest light and darkest dark contrast. Charcoal is forgiving, messy and has been used as an art material for thousands of years.
This BobBlast is also about another drawing tool I have added to my arsenal: Carbon Sketch Pencils. They are as smooth as graphite and you get those deep, rich, matte blacks like charcoal. Described as a "combination of graphic smoothness and charcoal depth… It produces a very strong smooth line that is jet-black." Perfect for sketching, drawing and working in combination with charcoal, pastels or graphite. Watch the demo - I draw with two different brands: General's and Wolff's.
Whether you practice Impressionism, Realism or Abstraction, you might like to try drawing and making marks with a carbon pencil!
