MONDAY MEMO
3rd graders Josiah, Alex, Cedric, and Peregrine watched a video in class to learn about the humidity component of the incubator they'll be using to hatch chickens in their class this spring.
Greetings!

It's Play Week! While it only involves the 6-8th graders, the energy and focus can be felt all over campus. The younger students are aware of the collaboration and problem solving involved, how hard the actors and tech crew are working, and that they are actively developing on the skills in communication, cooperation, time management, self-regulation, and problem solving they'll need to when it's their time.

Happy Monday,
Nelia
NOTES

Despite the snowy forecast, spring is just around the corner and that means seedlings should get started soon! Thanks to all those who have participated in our High Mowing Seed Fundraiser so far! If you forgot, there's still time! Please don't forget to turn in your Seed Order forms this afternoon or tomorrow! All checks should be made to The Riverside School. We will try to get the seeds to you by the beginning of April to give you plenty of time to plant. If you have any questions please email Cornelia (8th grader Leo's mom) or call her at 802-592-3093. Lost your form? You can order on-line through this link: Riverside School High Mowing Seeds Fundraiser Sale
SCHOOL CHOICE LEGISLATION UPDATE
A new draft bill was started in the House Committee on Education (NEK Choice parents got a summary of this from Nathan Freeman). This bill is much more favorable toward independent schools like Riverside. As soon as this new draft bill gets a number, we will ask families to write to committee members in support of the new bill and in opposition to the earlier bills (S.66 and H.258). At that time, we will be providing a list of emails, talking points, etc. We anticipate this any day, please stay tuned.
LION KING & PLAY WEEK (K-5 INCLUDED FRIDAY)
Play Week, a tradition developed by the faculty, embraces our mission to learn actively, lead patiently, and build community. If you stop by school this week you’ll see 6-8th grade students working together on a huge project. As teachers we remind them to use their time well, to stay focused on the tasks at hand, to strategize and solve problems, to help and encourage each other, and to be ready to show off their efforts, all important life skills. A somewhat loosely scheduled week like this would not be as successful in the fall, but after building skills in similar, smaller tasks all year, we think departing from academic classes to engage in them on a deeper level this entire week is well worth it. And come Friday night, we’ll all be impressed with how much pride and ownership our students have in the process and its result. Like so many of our special events, Play Week requires a lot of communication, flexibility, and help from parents.

COSTUME & MAKE-UP NOTES

  • bring in his/her own mascara and eye liner in a labeled ziplock bag and turn it in to Nelia before Friday;

6-8 YOUTH RISK BEHAVIOR SURVEY
During 6-8th gr Advisory classes on Monday, March 20th, middle schoolers will be participating in an online Youth Risk Behavior Survey. The YRBS was developed by the CDC and is co-sponsored by the Vermont Department of Health and Agency of Education. The YRBS has been administered
every other year in Vermont since 1993. Separate versions of the survey ask middle or high school students about health behaviors and assets or protective factors. Topics include personal safety and injury prevention, mental health, nutrition, physical activity, sexual health, substance use, and protective factors. Results from this survey help determine the extent to which adolescents engage in or experience health risk behaviors and help us to build on and increase positive supports in our area. The results support public health officials, educators, and community organizations to assess and improve efforts to reduce health risk behaviors among adolescents throughout the state and nation. They help develop and evaluate health-related programs and secure future funding.

The survey is anonymous. If you do not want your child to participate in this survey, please fill out and return this form by Friday, March 17th.
K-2nd gr. SWIMMING
Our youngest students will begin their weekly swim program on Thursday, March 23 at St. Johnsbury Academy. Those students will be getting lessons from a combination of Riverside and St. Johnsbury Academy staff as well as free time to explore the shallow water. Pick up for those students will be at the back door of the SJA pool at 3:30 on March 23, 30, April 6, 13, 20, May 4, and 11.

If you have to pick up a middle school student at Riverside as well, siblings can stay in the EDP at no charge until 3:45.
6-8 SPRING FIELD TRIP
The middle school Spring Field Trip (May 17-19) will be to Boston this year. We will depart in carpools from school at 8:00 am that Wednesday and return by 4:00 pm that Friday. We will be staying at a hotel in Lexington and going into the city on the Metro.

Parent Chaperones: thank you to those who signed up in the fall, you should have received in email today to confirm your availability. We may need a few more parents to help out, if you'd like to join the trip please email Nelia. Beware also that we may get more interest than we can afford, and won't necessarily be able to use all volunteers. Thank you for your willingness!

They fund these projects largely through revenue from two major annual craft fairs. Their funding has supported numerous elements of Riverside's program, including seeing professional performances, hosting guest artists in our classes, and supporting our play productions. Burklyn is asking for submissions for a new logo design! For more information about how to enter, read here.
