Dear Residents –

First and foremost, Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all of you! Hopefully, it will bring a bit of luck to the Tappan Zee High School boys basketball team tonight when, at 6 pm, they are playing in the NYS Class A semifinal game against New Hartford in Glens Falls, New York. If you want to watch the game but are not up for a three-hour trip, it can be viewed (for a fee) here. The winner will go on to play in the state championship game on Saturday night. Go Dutchmen!

Looking for something to do with your spare time? Rockland County is looking for individuals for their boards and commissions. These volunteer positions are an opportunity for residents to impact policies, shape laws, and serve in an advisory capacity to the county. Currently, there are more than 50 vacancies. If you are interested, head to the website to learn more about these boards and commissions, to obtain information on the requirements and responsibilities, and to apply for a position.

It looks like we are going to have dry weather this weekend, just in time for the Rockland County Ancient Order of Hibernians St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Sunday. I am looking forward to marching again this year and seeing the sea of smiling people and listening to the sounds of the pipe and drum bands. The parade starts at the Pfizer parking lot at 1:30 pm and marches down Middletown Road and onto Central Avenue. Additional questions about the parade? Scan the Orangetown Police Department QR code below for information on road closures and more.

I am looking forward to seeing some of you out there. But, whatever you decide to do, enjoy your weekend and be safe!

Regards,

Teresa M. Kenny

If you see something, say something. If you are in the Town of Orangetown or the Village of Nyack call 845-359-3700 for the Orangetown Police Department or Dial 911 immediately.

If you see

  • Unusual items or situations: A vehicle is parked in an odd location, a package/luggage is unattended, a window/door is open that is usually closed, or other out-of-the-ordinary situations occur.
  • Eliciting information: A person questions individuals at a level beyond curiosity about a building’s purpose, operations, security procedures and/or personnel, shift changes, etc.
  • Observation/surveillance: Someone pays unusual attention to facilities or buildings beyond a casual or professional interest. This includes extended loitering without explanation (particularly in concealed locations); unusual, repeated, and/or prolonged observation of a building (e.g., with binoculars or video camera); taking notes or measurements; counting paces; sketching floor plans, etc.

Some of these activities could be innocent—it’s important to consider the context of the situation. It's then up to law enforcement to determine whether the behavior warrants investigation.

Working in partnership together we can help keep our community safe.

Upcoming Events

We are excited to commence the 2nd Annual Field of Honor® in Tappan, NY! We thank all of last years' sponsors and hope you join us again in providing this great display in the center of Tappan. United States flags will fly in a solemn formation at the Manse Lawn field from May 20th through July 8th of 2023. We expect over 300 flags to produce a stirring display which will bring the community together in a patriotic tribute to honor our heroes. Each U.S. flag represents an individual and tells a story. Flags may be sponsored to honor individuals currently serving in our active-duty military, fallen servicemen and women, first responders, veterans, hometown heroes, frontline workers, 9/11 victims and COVID-19 victims. This unique event is the perfect opportunity for all of us to remember and honor our many heroes.
