JIBBOOM CLUB #1

In October, Jibboom presents artist Brechin Lee Morgan to speak about his sailing circumnavigation of the globe and the paintings that trip inspired. Brech in is a Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists . He exibits his work at the Thames River Gallery, and his JIBBOOM talk is sponsored by John Johnson.

Brechin was born in New London and spent summers of his childhood roaming the beach between Harkness and the Seaside Sanitarium.

In 1998 Brechin fulfilled a lifelong dream sailing alone from Block Island around the world spending four and a half years on his 27 foot cutter "Otter''. After sailing 32,000 miles and visiting 32 countries, he returned to Block Island becoming the 232nd solo circumnavigator since Joshua Slocum. It earned him the Golden Circle Award from the Joshua Slocum Society. Much of his work is drawn from the sketchbooks kept during the voyage.

It was a busy week at the Custom House.

Continued repair to water damaged walls has delayed the opening of our photography exhibition; we're now aiming for a date in early November. But the Food Stroll on Wednesday night was a resounding success. It was great to see so many friends out ambling through the downtown.

Our year-long Local History & Landmarks program, which we offer for free to New London's third grade classes, started up this week in three elementary schools: Nathan Hale, Winthrop, and Harbor. Christina Corcoran is running the program again this year and not on zoom. She is back in the classrooms and looking forward to taking the students on their first field trips.

We loved Wednesday's FOOD STROLL!  Our thanks to all of you who showed up. We've missed you! A great thanks to Captain Scott's Lobster Dock, who furnished the delicious RI clam chowder served at the Custom House.

Did you know Capt. Scott's makes a decadent lobster grilled cheese? Their take-out restaurant will stay open this year through Christmas Eve. Scott's fish market, of course, is a local treasure and open year-round.

We stopped by for lunch last week and ran into none other than Constance Kristofik the day after her film premiere at the Garde. Congratulations Constance!

We're online & on facebook!

Watch New London HarborCam, our 24/7 eye on the harbor. We've had over 3.2 million viewers!

Photo: we were thrilled to find this 1861 engraving of the 4th of Robert Mills' 1833-era New England Custom Houses. All four were built on basically the same design but modified to fit their specific sites. The New London, CT, New Bedford & Newburyport, MA, examples are still standing. But the custom house built in Middletown, CT, the subject of this engraving, was demolished in 1918 to make way for a new post office. We have no other images of this building.
