Rally Day continues a long SJC tradition
St. John's Cathedral has been celebrating Rally Day for many generations. The first ones, which originated at the turn of the last century, were a grand celebration of the reopening of Sunday school after a summer hiatus. One example found in the archives from 1925 was called "Re-Opening Sunday." Another more recent example (1981) was the celebration of St. John's Family Day. It included commissioning Sunday school teachers during the worship service, the first day of new Christian formation classes, followed by parish picnic at the Jacksonville Episcopal High School (now called Episcopal School of Jacksonville).

Somewhere along the way, we adopted the name Rally Day, as many other churches do, and broadened the focus to include all outreach and ministry programs. This broader scope aligns well with an explanation given in one Sunday School guidebook from 1905 that "Rally Day comes at the end of the summer break, and is used as a means of rallying the Church forces again for the work of fall and winter.”

This year, this wonderful Christian tradition of welcoming our church family back takes on a special significance as we were unable to meet in person last year. So mark your calendar and plan to join us Sunday, August 29. Come find out about the exciting programming, Christian education activities, and volunteer opportunities of the fall! We will be live streaming from Taliaferro Hall (thanks to our new A/V equipment) for those of you who cannot be here in person.
