Join us for the Annual Meeting of the League

of Women Voters of Kent, Saturday, June 8!

The Annual Meeting of the League of Women Voters of Kent is set for Saturday, June 8, 8:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., in Pierson Hall at the Kent United Methodist Church, 1435 E. Main St., Kent.

We do the important work of ensuring the continuation of our organization into the next program year. New budget, adding new leadership, updating positions and providing leadership with direction.

There’s a potluck brunch that’s free. And we have a wonderful time meeting new members and greeting our fellow warriors!

What to Bring?

  • YOUR MEETING PACKET! Be sure to read and study it first!
  • Optional contribution of a brunch item. The brunch is free to all.
  • If you plan on joining us, please bring your own reusable place setting.
  • LWV Kent will provide beverages.

Our speaker will be Collin Marozzi (pictured here), deputy director of ACLU Ohio. He’ll be talking about voting! What else!?!

Click here or here (alternative link depending on your browser) for all the details and the packet that you’ll need to review before the meeting.

Filling needs: LWV Kent explores rides for voters to polls and seeks new volunteers for Observer Corps

The LWVK Voter Service committee is looking at providing rides to voters needing transportation to vote. This is something the committee is starting to consider and would like to gage interest. The committee also oversees the LWV Kent’s Observer Corps. Corps volunteers attend government meetings, and their reports are uploaded to our website.

If you can help or want to learn more, sign up at the June 8 Annual Meeting or call Voter Services Committee Chairs Jill Hazelton at 330-687-7119 or Stacy Yaniglos at 330-697-5723. Need to know more about becoming an Observer? Click here.

A last push at the finish line with a new opportunity

in June to collect petition signatures

Most petitions will have been collected by the time this VOTER publishes. But LWV Kent has been tasked with holding a few more signature-collection events because our fearless leaders Anne Reid and Iris Meltzer have done such a great job organizing the signature-collection effort and producing significant results.

First, thanks to all of YOU who manned the weekly sites and the pop-up events and thanks to those organizations who hosted: Kent United Church of Christ, Unitarian Universalist Church of Kent at Hobbs Hall and the Brimfield Bread Oven.

Below are the links to the new event sites with days and times. Click the links to sign up. Please still spread the word about these petition locations to your social circles, social media and email contacts.

Need petitions? Contact Iris Meltzer at iris.meltzer@gmail.com. If you have questions about meeting places for June 8, email her about that, also.

Somebody's gotta do it? Maybe you?

It starts out like this: “We, the people of the City of Kent, Ohio, grateful to Almighty God for the freedoms we enjoy, pursuant to the provisions of the Constitution of the State of Ohio, extending to municipalities the privilege of ‘Home rule’ in order to secure for ourselves and posterity practical and efficient methods in administrating the affairs of the City, to protect the interests and insure the continued welfare of the community and to enjoy all the privileges of local self government, do adopt this Charter.

This living document gets aired out and discussed every 10 years—next up in 2025. The League of Women Voters of Kent has had the important responsibility of participating on the Charter Review Commission. But just like the charter, our position needs some airing out. First, we need a committee and a chairperson. Here is the LWV Kent position on the Kent City Charter. Interested in this short-term task? Email President Sherry Rose.
