Greetings Community Members and Partners –

Four years ago, at our very first community town hall about Lone Star College-Houston North, we expressed the goal of being a completion-based college. This means that we wanted to place an extra focus on students finishing their personal and professional goals related to graduation, transfer, and the workforce. This past weekend represented one of the most significant milestones toward this goal with our first in-person commencement.

From day one, we have set a target of a three-year graduation rate of 25% by 2025. This is an ambitious goal that will place LSC-Houston North is in the top 10% of the state. While we are too early in our existence to know how we are progressing towards this goal, we do know that we are seeing strong completion numbers is our course success rates, student persistence, and know our graduation numbers.

We have 294 individuals eligible for graduation this year which is more than double the 119 we had the year before. We also had 50 GED graduates. At commencement, approximately 120 students walked across the stage. They were cheered on loudly by their friends and family members. When our Chancellor, Dr. Stephen C. Head, created Lone Star College-Houston North he did it with the intention of improving student success and completion rates, particularly amongst students of color. This moment is a realization of that vision.

While this will always be memorable for being LSC-Houston North’s first in-person ceremony, what will always remain fresh on my mind will be the stories of our incredible students. One such student is Maria. She decided to return to college later in life. At age 55, she received her degree and celebrated with her entire family, including her mother.

We also had students such as Cherrtoya, a mother who has been so focused that she did not realize that she was graduating with honors.

In addition, we have over 60 dual credit students graduating with their associate degrees. These students will receive their high school diplomas in early June.

The ceremony itself had several highlights. Our keynote speaker was Judge Vanessa Gilmore, former Judge from the Southern District of Texas. Our student speaker, Ciara Harris, did an outstanding job discussing her journey through college as a mother of two girls.

Our event ended with a rousing address from the Honorable Sheila Jackson Lee who also provided a congressional recognition for the college.

We understand that a credential is more than just an accomplishment of the student or even the college. It is a collective achievement of families and a point of celebration for communities. Each of these students walked in with a desire to take steps to better lives. They are now leaving with the certificates, degrees, and diplomas that will enable them to also better the lives of others.

Please join me in congratulating our 2021-2022 Lone Star College-Houston North Graduating Class.

Sincerely,

Quentin Wright, Ed.D.
