Our client, Ms. Allen’s life took an unexpected turn when she recently became the sole caretaker to her three young nieces and nephews. To make comfortable accommodations for the children, Ms. Allen had to move to a larger home. Although she could afford a larger home for herself and the children, she could not afford to furnish it. On top of not being able to furnish their new home, Ms. Allen’s car was in desperate need of repair to get herself to and from work and the children to school. Initially, our Family Advocacy and Support Services Department had a difficult time in finding assistance to meet the needs of Ms. Allen’s family. Then, in just one day everything changed - a McKinney police officer donated a couch to the family to help furnish their living room. Subsequently, the Center received a call from BedStart, a local non-profit that helps households in poverty, crisis or need by providing household furnishing at no cost; they had four beds that they would be delivering to the family the following week. After the wonderful news we received from BedStart, Ms. Allen then got a call from Auto Haven, a local car dealership who was inspired by her story. They asked her to come by that day to receive maintenance on her vehicle. Ms. Allen was incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support she received from the Center and local resources, and we could not be more thankful for these local resources who help us foster comfortable living arrangements for the children and families we serve.
