Raise your hand if you graduated college while neither of your parents earned a degree. Raise your hand if you had to navigate college on your own and still managed to cross the finish line. OCBC is launching a new quarterly human-interest series, “Making a Difference,” that brings the face and voice of OCBC members to life by sharing how they’re making a difference in their communities. The inaugural column, coming in a couple of weeks, marks National First-generation College Student Day on November 8. Can you guess which OCBC members in high-profile positions were the first in their families to graduate from college? Look for the Q&A stories soon to get to know these leaders and how their stories make a difference in Orange County.

12th Annual Turning Red Tape into Red Carpet Nominees Named |
Have you heard? Nominees for the 12th Annual Turning Red Tape into Red Carpet Awards have been announced and OCBC thanks all nominees for their hard work! More than 20 public agencies submitted a total of 34 nominations in six award categories this year. From creating new jobs in healthcare to building campus housing for graduate students, the Awards recognize public agencies and leaders for implementing policies and programs that cut through red tape, eliminate barriers to economic growth and open the door to private sector jobs creation. Winners will be announced live at the Awards Reception on November 17, 2022, in Irvine. Nominees featured this week include:
Category: Building & Land Reuse and Community Revitalization
City of Anaheim & Jamboree Housing: Finamore Place
- Finamore Place is a new 102-unit affordable housing development by Jamboree Housing for large families and formerly homeless families built on a formerly vacant property and located near Anaheim job centers.
University of California, Irvine: Verano 8 Housing Project
- Verano 8 is a new 1,055-bed graduate student housing development on UCI’s campus. These new units allow UCI to claim the most comprehensive graduate housing guarantee in the UC system.
City of Santa Ana: MainPlace Specific Plan
- The City of Santa Ana’s MainPlace Specific Plan is an ongoing transit-oriented redevelopment of the MainPlace site, aiming to add 1,900 housing units and economic development opportunities.
City of Fountain Valley: Prado Family Homes
- Prado Family Homes is the City of Fountain Valley’s first new, fully affordable housing project in almost 20 years. It adds 50 units for low-income families and includes an onsite social services office.

City of Placentia: Placentia FiberCity® Broadband Internet Access for All
- The City of Placentia and SiFi Networks entered a “Smart City” agreement to deliver fiber optic broadband internet access to homes and businesses. This $35M investment did not use General Fund dollars. About half of planned underground fiber ducts have been installed.
CalOptima Health: Housing for Health OC
- CalOptima Health is providing preventative services addressing non-medical needs and drivers of health equity, such as access to housing. By partnering with Housing for Health Orange County, 577 CalOptima Health members experiencing homelessness have received supportive services.
Orange County Sanitation District: Partnering with Heritage Museum Orange County
- OC San partnered with HMOC for the 2021-22 school year to provide virtual and in-person educational content on wastewater management. Thousands of students have participated, teaching them about home practices that help the environment and careers in wastewater treatment.
City of Fountain Valley: Hyundai Community Support Program
- The Hyundai Community Support Program streamlines Hyundai’s $100K annual financial support to the City into a single grant supporting the Community Services Department, local nonprofits, the Chamber and popular events to meet targeted community needs.
City of Anaheim & Jamboree Housing Corporation: An Evolution in More Innovative Affordable Housing
- Since 2008, the City of Anaheim and Jamboree Housing have added more than 700 affordable homes at seven properties throughout the city. In addition to the new 102-unit Finamore Place, other projects include senior affordable housing and the conversion of an Econo Lodge into permanent supportive housing.
City of Irvine: Wild Rivers Water Park at the Great Park
- In July 2021, the City of Irvine and Wild Rivers, Inc. delivered a new, 20-acre Wild Rivers Water Park at the Great Park 10 years after the Water Park closed at its former location. The Water Park, which shares revenue between the City and the company, brings more than 1,200 new jobs to the region.
Orange County Health Care Agency & CalOptima Health: Be Well OC Orange Campus
- Be Well OC is a coalition of hundreds of OC organizations supporting a high-quality behavioral health system. In 2018, CalOptima Health and OCHCA entered an agreement to deliver behavioral health services at the first Be Well OC Orange Campus, which has served an estimated 2,400 CalOptima Health members since opening.
County of Orange Social Services Agency: Afghan Refugee Resettlement
- SSA organized community and faith-based organizations to support more than 500 Afghan refugees resettling in Orange County after the U.S. withdrew from Afghanistan. To date, 524 Afghan refugees have been connected to resources, including housing, employment, safety net programs and education.
City of Irvine & City of Hope Orange County: Lennar Foundation Cancer Center
- City of Hope OC’s Lennar Foundation Cancer Center opened in Irvine in 2022 after close collaboration with the City and County agencies. This partnership created more than 350 new professional jobs in Irvine as well as a new regional hub for medical innovation.

2022-23 OC Community Indicators Report & Rollout |
Local experts representing education, housing development, academia and consumer products discussed insights from the 2022-23 Orange County Community Indicators Report at the report’s rollout last week in Anaheim. Presented in partnership with steering committee members CalOptima Health, First 5 Orange County, Orange County Community Foundation, Orange County United Way and OCBC, the annual assessment takes a deep dive into the economy, housing, income, education, health and infrastructure of the nation’s sixth largest county. Panelists included Vice President, Land Entitlement and Land and Housing Development at Brookfield Residential Properties and OCBC Board Chair David Bartlett, Professor of Child Development and Educational Studies at Fullerton College Jennifer Kinkel, Associate Professor of Finance and Faculty Director of the Center for Investment and Wealth Management at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) Christopher Schwarz, and Senior Vice President, Customer Leadership Retail-West Zone at The Coca-Cola Company Mini Walia. Moderated by OCBC Chief Economic Advisor Dr. Wallace Walrod, topics discussed included the impact of home prices on employee recruitment and retention, the consequences of COVID-19 guidelines on mental health for teens, and a special feature on remote work trends. Providence Plans $712 Mission Expansion |
Providence is expanding its Mission Viejo hospital with a new tower and construction of two satellite medical facilities in south Orange County. The expansion will serve to revamp the hospital to current needs and accommodate future growth in the community. Providence Mission Hospital marked its 50th anniversary this year. Edison Scholars Applications Now Open |
The 2023 Edison Scholars Program, which awards 30 high school seniors with $50,000 college scholarships to pursue careers in STEM, is now open through December 9. Designed to help students pursue careers that make the world a better place with their bright ideas and innovations in STEM, Edison International has awarded more than $13.5 million in scholarships to 730 students through the Edison Scholars program since 2006.

Human Options CEO Named a 2022 OC Visionary |
The Los Angeles TimesOC recently named nonprofit leader Human Options CEO Maricela Rios-Faust a 2022 OC Visionary. According to the TimesOC, Maricela Rios-Faust is a leader in preventing and ending relationship violence through her work as CEO of Human Options, one of the most comprehensive relationship violence services providers in Orange County, and her leadership on partnerships and collaboratives aimed at ending the cycle of violence.

Make-a-Wish OC & the Inland Empire to Host "Journey into Wishes" |
Join Make-a-Wish Orange County & the Inland Empire November 5 at the Disneyland Hotel for its annual signature event “Journey into Wishes” to raise funds that help grant life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. This year’s event will recognize Angels Baseball for their longtime wish granting support, and will include auction packages, a live 60-piece music ensemble, dancing, food and more.

Economic Development Committee |
On September 21, the Economic Development Committee hosted Tre Bradley, Deputy Director of Sustainable Freight and Supply Chain Development with the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz). Tre gave updates regarding the current outlook of freight and ports and the state’s recent substantial investment into these systems to mitigate back logs experienced during the pandemic. Specifically, California has developed large incentive programs for electric trucking vehicles by investing a historic $2.3 billion in our ports. Tre attributes much of the current supply chain disruptions to AB 5, a law impacting truck drivers to be independent contractors, clean truck standards, and serious labor shortages in the truck driving and rail industry. The Deputy Director also discussed how California is exploring supply chains for rare earth minerals such as lithium and boron, minerals crucial to computer and clean energy technology. The Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development is planning an in-person clean energy trade mission to Japan from March 11-18, 2023. The trade mission will be co-led by California Lt. Governor Eleni Kounalakis and GO-Biz Director Dee Dee Myers with other senior State government officials and will anchor the World Smart Energy Week trade show in Tokyo. Organizers are recruiting a business delegation of 30-35 representatives, including 8 SMEs, to join the California pavilion as co-exhibitors at World Smart Energy Week Tokyo. The pavilion, subsidized by the California STEP program, gives qualified businesses the opportunity to promote their products and services to the Japanese market; space is limited. Registration closes December 15, 2022.
