The Washington County Playhouse Dinner Theater is holding AUDITIONS for SHOUT!! THE MOD MUSICAL on Sunday, September 19. Sign-in begins at 2:00pm. Auditions begin at 2:30pm. Auditions will be held at The Playhouse which is located at 44 North Potomac Street, Rear in the heart of Hagerstown's Arts and Entertainment District and City Center.

With its irresistible blend of hip-swiveling hits, eye-popping fashions and outrageous dance moves, SHOUT! The Mod Musical takes audiences back to the music, style, and freedom of the 1960s.

SHOUT!! follows five groovy gals as they come of age during those glorious days that made England swing. Traveling in time from 1960 to 1970, SHOUT! chronicles the dawning liberation of women, from the rise of Dusty Springfield, Petula Clark and Cilla Black as independent women with major careers, to their American counterparts, redefining themselves in the face of changing attitudes about gender. With a shimmy and shake, the songs are tied together by hilarious sound bites from the period – from '60s advertisements to letters answered by an advice columnist who thinks that every problem can be solved with a "fetching new hair style and a new shade of lipstick."

This production will be directed & choreographed by Kelly Jenkins Moreland with music direction by Tyler Miller. All roles are open. Must be 16+ to audition.

Please prepare 16 bars of a song in the style of the show. You may also be asked to learn/sing a song from SHOUT!!, so familiarity with the cast recording is highly encouraged, but not required. Be prepared to perform cold readings from the script. There may also be a dance audition, so please bring or wear clothes that you can move in and that show our choreographer how you move. Please also bring jazz/character shoes if you have them.

All performers will be paid a per-performance stipend. Additionally, those cast will be given the opportunity to join the restaurant service staff (if legally eligible and following training) where they may earn gratuities.

Performance Dates (all performances in the evening unless specified): January 21, 22, 28, 29, February 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 26, & 27 (matinee).

Authentic Community Theatre presents One Night of Rent at The Maryland Theatre

Tuesday, November 2, 2021 at 7:00 pm

Tickets on sale to the general public Friday, August 13, 2021 at 11am

Back by Popular Demand, Authentic Community Theatre presents: RENT ONE NIGHT ONLY! Based loosely on Puccini's La Boheme, Jonathan Larson's Rent follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. The physical and emotional complications of the disease pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Tom, and Angel. Maureen deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne, wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble. Benny has sold out his Bohemian ideals in exchange for a hefty income and is on the outs with his former friends. Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an outsider to life in general. How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this groundbreaking musical.

Saturday, December 4, 2021 and Sunday, December 5, 2021!

Buddy, a young orphan, mistakenly crawls into Santa's bag of gifts and is transported to the North Pole. The would-be elf is raised, unaware that he is actually a human until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. With Santa's permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father and discover his true identity. Faced with the harsh realities that his father is on the naughty list and his half-brother doesn't even believe in Santa, Buddy is determined to win over his new family and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas. This modern-day holiday classic is sure to make everyone embrace their inner self. After all, the best way to spread Christmas Cheer is singing loud for all to hear.

Berkeley Arts Council Offers Fall Art Classes

Starting in September, the Berkeley Arts Council is offering art classes in-person at the Berkeley Art Works and via the Google Zoom application. The fall session begins September 7, 2021! These classes offer a variety of media and will appeal to a range of ages and experiences.

  • Acrylic Paint and Palette Knife Technique is designed to help make a personal statement in your art. Express emotions boldly and fearlessly and open the door to mixing colors with great texture. Using a palette knife, learn how the movement of the wrist will execute movement on the canvas or any surface on which you choose to work. Bring a reference photograph or picture for inspiration. This class will be held in person for four weeks on Tuesdays, 9:30-11:30am, beginning September 7.
  • The Creative You! is the first of a series of workshops exploring different styles of creating art projects in 3-dimensions. In this exciting class, the instructor will guide students in defining and planning creative ideas and building their ideas in 3-D! Participants will start creating using cardboard, and progress to making an abstract face, a marble maze, a pinball machine, and a full head mask ready for any occasion. Bring your ideas and get ready to exercise those creative muscles! No prior art experience is necessary. Designed for anyone ages 15 and older who wants to explore the possibilities of The Creative You! Class will be held in person for four weeks on Tuesdays, 6:30-8:30pm, beginning September 21.
  • Creative Landscape Painting - Give your landscape painting that WOW factor! Working from a single landscape reference photo, the instructor will present different approaches to painting your landscape scene with vastly different results. This is a unique way to push your art into new dimensions, all the while learning composition and color theory beyond the usual. Surprise yourself with new abilities to advance your artistic expertise. Two sessions are being offered: in person for four weeks on Wednesdays, 3:00-5:00pm, and via Zoom for four weeks on Wednesdays, 6:30-8:30pm. Both sessions begin September 22.

  • Making Clay Tiles (Tessellations) - Students will make plaster molds and learn to make different types of clay tiles. This class is being offered in two sessions: in-person for four weeks on Thursdays, 2:00-4:00pm, and via Zoom for four weeks on Thursdays, 6:30-8:30pm. Both sessions begin September 23.
  • Printmaking with Mixed Media - Print, the mark left on a surface by pressure: the footprint on a beach, the imprint of a leaf, or texture of weathered wood. The making of a print can be achieved by a wide variety of methods. Making a permanent record of an object and making a series of line impressions that differ in color or surface texture is only part of the intriguing craft of the printmaker! This 6-week class will be held via Zoom on Saturdays, 9:00-11:00am, starting October 16.
  • Become a Color Pro focuses on all the features, benefits, and nuances of the primary colors. Each week, participants will delve into the commonly known hues in each color family, starting with the reds, then the blues, and then the yellows; with the last class to focus on grays and blacks. This class will give participants a firm foundation for determining which hue in a color family to use to get a specific effect. Simple exercises will be presented for each color family and participants can use most any medium: watercolor, acrylic or oil paint, or colored pencil (pastel not recommended). This class is being offered in two sessions: in person for four weeks on Wednesdays, 3:00-5:00pm, and via Zoom for four weeks on Wednesdays, 6:30-8:30pm. Both sessions begin October 20.
