Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage

Month Resonates with New Jersey Squadron

The Atlantic Ocean lies less than 10 miles away, but for most members of the New Jersey Wing’s Capt. Bud Jackson Composite Squadron, it's the Pacific that holds a special significance in May — Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month — and throughout the year.

After all, some 90% of the Jackson squadron’s 29 senior members and 106 cadets are of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) descent. The squadron is located in Edison and in Middlesex County, which has the nation’s highest concentration of Asian Indians, accounting for 28.3% of residents in the 2010 census.

Wing Provides North Dakota Flooding Photos

ND Wing flood photo 2.jpg

The North Dakota Wing went viral with its Facebook post featuring aerial imagery of flooding captured earlier this month by members from the Grand Forks and Fargo squadrons and Wing Headquarters.

To date, the post has been shared 620 times and reached 8,676 people with over 12,000 engagements. Not bad for a small wing in a rural state!” said Lt. Col. Sean M. Johnson, announcing the totals to the wing's 250 members.

Our wing and CAP has also gotten some great exposure, on top of providing the state with some incredible imagery to make key decisions off of in the future,” added Johnson, the wing's chief of staff for missions. None of this could happen without dedicated volunteers across the organization giving selflessly of their time and talents.”

Cadets Eligible for Scholarship Opportunity Through Red Cross Leadership Program

From June 1-Aug. 31, CAP's Operation Pulse Lift mission is partnering with the American Red Cross's Leaders Save Lives” summer scholarship program.

As a Leaders Save Lives” blood support team leader, a CAP cadet can earn leadership experience, volunteer hours, and an Amazon.com Gift Card and be entered to win a college scholarship. To participate, cadets need to coordinate a one-day summer blood drive through the scholarship program and join youth across the nation who are helping save lives through the Red Cross. If you are a cadet, or have cadets interested, please contact pulselift@capnhq.gov.

More About the Scholarship Program

Every unit of blood collected through the combined efforts of CAP volunteers saves three lives, according to the Red Cross. During its COVID-19 pandemic response, Operation Pulse Lift has collected this number of units:

Join CAP's Ongoing Damage Assessment Efforts

Attention, CAP members. Do you want to be involved in a disaster response, regardless of where you live? Have you always wanted to serve during a mission but felt you don’t get the opportunity because disasters don't occur where you live, you don’t fly, or you’re not a member of a specialized team?

Things are changing. Did you see this article on Harnessing Technology”  in the Spring edition of Civil Air Patrol Volunteer? This past year, CAP helped assess damage from Hurricane Ida; tornadoes in the Quad States, New Orleans, and Andover, Kansas; and New Mexico's Hermit Creek Fire.

You now have the opportunity to support FEMA by helping conduct imagery-based damage assessments. On behalf of the CAP Geospatial Program, all members, including those from our international squadrons, are eligible to apply and help.

You must complete the training to be eligible. You may be called on to support a disaster response (to hurricane, fires, tornadoes, floods, etc.), regardless of where you live. To sign up and help, see these details.
