TIME TO BE
I know every season has its joys and drawbacks, but I am a fan of summer! I love waking up to the sun streaming through the trees & the chorus of chirping birds. Summer is a time of longer days, more sunlight, blue skies, blooming flowers, hummingbirds, and butterflies. For me, it’s a time to enjoy The Muny, backyard barbeques, the Cardinals, and my koi pond. Summer is a season of hope and new life.

F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote, “And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees…, I had the familiar conviction that life was starting over again in the summer.” As we embrace the beauty around us, Summer invites us to take time to slow down, relax, and experience that which feeds our souls.

The ancient Greeks distinguished two different concepts of time - Chronos and Kairos. Chronos, the root word for chronological reference to clock and calendar time, time that can be measured in seconds, minutes, hours, and years. Philosophers and mystics refer to Kairos as “deep time,” experienced time - those moments so perfect that everything seems to stop. Kairos time cannot truly be measured; it must be experienced by deep breaths, the joy of the present moment, love, laughter, and a state of flow.

It’s the simple difference between measuring time by minutes and experiencing life by moments. Franciscan Priest Fr. Richard Rohr tells us Kairosian moments are epiphanies, moments of wonder & joy. We live in Kairos time when we stop rushing around, turn away from our clocks & calendars, become still, and experience profound joy in the moment. It’s the moments that matter! Whether it’s watching a five-year-old run barefoot through the tall grass, snorkeling in the Caribbean, or sitting on your front porch enjoying the sunset, these are all God-moments.

Jesus told us that the Kingdom of Heaven is within. Awakening to our Divine Essence, we realize that the joys we are searching for are waiting for us. We just have to stop rushing and take TIME TO BEHave a beautiful summer full of Kariosian moments.

Blessings~
Rev. Jan

"Book of the Month."
Featured Book for July:
Celebrate Yourself!

by Eric Butterworth

Celebrate Yourself joyously embraces the concept that "every person is an eachness within the allness of God, an integral part of a dynamic universe."
Jesus said, "It is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom." (Lk. 12:32).
Renowned minister and educator Eric Butterworth makes this interpretation of the above quotation from Luke: "When the ties that bind the mind are broken and a person is introduced to his real self that has no limitations, the bells of heaven ring for joy... As the universe rushes and streams into you from all sides, it is a veritable cosmic celebration of ecstasy. It could be
said, and should be, that you are the universe celebrating itself as you."
Reverend Butterworth shares knowledge and insights regarding our inborn possibilities for limitless growth. The universality of Eric Butterworth's insights is timeless and clearly revealed in this collection of classic essays.
Featured Book for August:

One of our core values for First Unity Church is: LOVE

As expressions of Spirit, we reflect and nurture Divine in all.
Love is the nature of who we are.

COMMUNITY BEHAVIORS
  • We express God’s unconditional Love as we affirm good everywhere and in everyone
  • Our spiritual community comes together regularly to create an environment of Love and compassion
  • We commit to heart-based collaboration and cooperation as we share our ideas, gifts, and talents

INDIVIDUAL BEHAVIORS
  • I behold the Christ in others as I practice unconditional forgiveness
  • As I love myself, I radiate love - drawing myself to more love
  • I take the Love I experience at First Unity out into the world
A four-year-old boy was asked by his mother what he had learned in Bible school where the theme was Discipleship and Saving Mother Earth. He said, “It was all about Jesus and the 12 recycles.”

Jesus and Satan are having a competition on who can finish an essay first. 1, 2, 3, GO. Jesus starts and takes his time while Satan is typing up a storm. Satan is typing so fast that the power goes out and both computers are shut off. They start back up, and Jesus states that he is done with the essay. Riddled, Satan asks how he wrote that fast. Jesus turns to him and simply says, "Jesus saves."

Q: What do you call batman skipping church.
A: Christian Bale

Q: Who was the smallest man in the Bible?
A: King David because he was only 12 inches tall as he was a ruler.
