June 2024 Network Updates

In Observance of Juneteenth We Reflect on Learnings from our Webinar Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas, 1954 and DEI in California

On April 23, 2024, we commemorated the 70th Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education with a convening focused on the ongoing fight for African American educational freedom and success in the California State University (CSU) system. This event highlighted the historical roots of educational justice in California, dating back to the Tape v. Hurley case in 1885, and included personal reflections from CSU collaborators on their family histories of school segregation. For insights from the webinar, including an impactful quote from California State University East Bay's Kyzyl Fenno-Smith, read Network Director Shonda Goward's reflection.

Paving the Way for LGBTQIA2S+ Student Success: Highlights from the 2024 CSU Student Success Symposium

After months of planning, the Network hosted the CSU LGBTQIA2S+ Student Success Symposium from March 7-8, 2024, in Sacramento, CA. Over 130 staff, students, and faculty from all 23 CSU campuses and the Chancellor’s Office, along with participants from the California Community College system, gathered to enhance equitable success for LGBTQIA2S+ students. Remarkably, 43% of attendees were students. The event featured diverse presentations and a keynote on Queer student servingness in Hispanic Serving Institutions, and culminated in identifying priority themes for action and planning future Communities of Practice to maintain momentum and drive change across the CSU system.

Implementing Systemwide Changes in the CSU through our Middle Leadership Academy

During the 2017-2018 academic year, the Network launched its first Middle Leadership Academy to support nine CSU campus teams in implementing Executive Order (EO) 1110, which required the elimination of remedial English and mathematics courses. Our recent report highlights how campus teams utilized the Academy to plan and execute their responses to EO 1110 in math, explores the Academy's capacity for fostering equitable change within the CSU, and suggests that year-long leadership academies involving faculty, staff, and administrators can enhance the implementation of new policies mandated by the CSU Chancellor’s Office or campus leadership.

2024-25 Middle Leadership Academy

We are thrilled to announce that the application period for the 2024-25 MLA will open on August 1. We invite cross-functional teams of staff, students, administrators, and faculty from each campus to apply. The Academy is grounded in a problem-based learning model that motivates participants to "lead from the middle" as they explore and apply strategies to support equitable student learning, engagement, progression, and success on their campuses.
