THE MID-WEEK BUZZ

Happy Thursday Church!

We hope your mid-week is looking good!

A huge thank you to the Kertson family for leading an amazing worship service last Sunday. Thank you Brandon, Kendra and Peyton for blessing us with your gifts of music, inspiration and hope. We recognized all the children and adults, who received tokens of encouragement and appreciation for the upcoming school year.

Thanks to Rev. John for the celebration of communion, and welcoming everyone to the table.

We ask you to continue to keep Pastor Greg and his family in your prayers. While we miss them, we know this time of treatment completion, and the beginning of recovery and healing is what is most important.

Please direct any prayer requests to the church office, Office1@ccpucc.org. Vicki Holland will receive those requests and communicate with you. If you have Pastoral care needs, please let us know using Office1@ccpucc.org, or call the church office at 858-748-3304.

We will continue to worship as always at 9:15 Sunday morning, welcoming some new faces, and some familiar, as we continue to glorify God, and be grateful for all the gifts and love we have been given.

In 7 words for worship (pt. 2)

In the Hebrew language there a number of words that are often translated as worship. I thought maybe we’d look at each of these over the next month or two. Last week we looked at the most popular “hallel”where we get the word “hallelujah.” This week we look at our second word, “yadah.” Yadah has the meaning of "the extended hand, to throw out the hand, therefore to worship with extended hand, to lift the hands." It is commonly used for the call to lift up one’s hands to praise God, like in Psalm 63:1 below, but it can also have the idea of lifting up God, God’s name or lifting up thanks or praise to God.

If you’ve gone to a large group event like a concert or a sporting event, you will often see people lifting up their hands to sway and move to the music or to cheer and celebrate a big play. It’s a natural movement for us an humans that opens our bodies and our souls to joy and love more fully. I encourage you this week to try throwing your hands up or out during our worship time and see how it opens up something else in you as well. If you’ve not done it before, it might feel awkward at first, but you might find a kind of freedom and release on the other side.

2 Chronicles 20:21 Give thanks (yadah) to the Lord, for His lovingkindness is everlasting.

Psalm 63:1 So I will bless thee as long as I live; I will (yadah) lift up my hands in Thy name.

Psalm 107:15 Oh that men would praise (yadah) the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men.

New Member Informational Gathering

September 8, 2024

Hey Church, it is time again to welcome new members into our beloved community. On Sunday, September 8th, I will offer a short, new member information gathering following worship in the Fireside Room. We will discuss a bit of the history of the United Church of Christ, The values and procedures of the Community Church of Poway, and what membership means in our congregation. There is no pressure in our congregation to be a member, everyone is accepted as full participants in our church. Membership gives you the privilege of voting on big issues. All new members will be welcomed on Sunday, September 15th during our worship hour. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact either Pastor Greg or Vicki in the church office.

Books & More

We will be reading Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus starting on Tuesday, August 27.

This novel is laugh-out-loud funny, shrewdly observant, and studded with a dazzling cast of supporting characters, Lessons in Chemistry is as original and vibrant as its protagonist-Meet Elizabeth Zott: “a gifted research chemist, absurdly self-assured and immune to social convention” and is not your average woman. In fact, she would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman.

#1 GLOBAL BESTSELLER AND A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: The New York Times, Washington Post, NPR, Oprah Daily, Entertainment Weekly, and Newsweek.

Books and More meets every Tuesday at 10:00am in the Fireside Room.

All are welcome to join us.
