Oklahoma CBT Partners Congratulate 2020-2021 Field Placement Students
The Oklahoma Public Health Training Center (OPHTC), Southern Plains Tribal Health Board (SPTHB), and Oklahoma Public Health Association (OPHA) congratulate eight graduate students who completed their 2020-2021 student field placements.

Three students engaged in projects related to COVID-19: Andrew Schaff used GIS skills to investigate the distribution of COVID-19 across Oklahoma; Spencer Hall helped develop target metrics to act as “control” for Oklahoma, and Flor De La Garza evaluated the use of iPads in nursing homes for virtual family visits, and as potential post-pandemic education model.

Collaborating with OPHA, Garrett Pierce assessed and evaluated policy that aligned with the OPHA’s policy agenda, and Heather Scott assisted OPHA with the annual conference planning, marketing, and outreach.

Three students used their field placement to work with, or set up their future work with American Indian tribes. Joshua Moore evaluated the effects of rural/urban location on the association between diabetes and obesity among Native Americans hospitalized in Kansas between 2011 and 2016. Birjis Khan helped with the preparation and completion of a Hazard Communication Protocol that provided preparedness training and emergency response guidance to a tribe in central Oklahoma. Amber Anderson engaged in a literature review to describe the current role of Indigenous cancer patient navigators and cultural/spiritual support services in healthcare systems. Although this was the second year that students had to adapt their projects to the realities of a continuing pandemic, they were determined and resilient in completing their field placements.

The Oklahoma CBT partners are proud of our awardees, and we wish them all the best for their future adventures. Congratulations!
