Why We Love This Place Wednesday:

Rebecca Kirkland

By Terra Avilla

There I was, in the trenches of being a table mom, (yes, it is a real thing if you can believe it or not), and I once again had bitten off more than I could chew. I was stuck in a room of rambunctious little children running around, but atlas, I had a savior.

A savior in the form of a seventeen-year-old girl, you all know as Rebecca Kirkland.

Now through my time at the high school, I knew who Ms. Rebecca was, but as she never (and I mean never, ever) got in trouble, our paths just didn’t cross that much during my tenure at Lassen High School.

My first real interaction with little sweetness came, when she was chosen to be on Ms. Lassen County’s Court and she showed up to volunteer at our Holiday with A Hero Golf Tournament. That day was a blur, and I just remember Rebecca stepping in everywhere that I needed her too.

“Hey, Rebecca – can you sell these raffle tickets?” “Hey can you re-arrange these baskets really quickly for me?” “Hey, Becca can you tell the golfers lunch in ready?” “Hey can you tell my child to put that down and put her shoes back on?” The response was always the same, “Sure” with a smile.

I like to think that I am a delightful person, but Rebecca truly is, and the maturity in which she carries herself, always makes me forget that she is still on high school. I was not that mature and put together at that age. (To be fair, I’m still not that mature and put together now). Rebecca is just so sweet and thoughtful.

I reconnected with Ms. Rebecca during Best of Broadway and got to see first hand the size of her heart. She is so patient and thoughtful. After weeks of dedicating her free time to other people’s children – she remained so sweet and energetic. Even my high-strung self was on empty, but Rebecca just happily kept trucking along.

During this time, she overheard me talking about an upcoming Holiday with a Hero Shopping Event, and she asked what she could do to help. I told her that we obviously would love Ms. Lassen County and her court to come (because let’s be real – who doesn’t like princesses), but it was late notice, and the event was early on a Saturday morning.

Rebecca stated she would be so honored to help as she and the court had assisted for our Christmas event (and by the way – were amazing).

Ms. Rebecca and Ms. Olivia showed up, and as expected were absolutely perfect in every way. I am so thankful our paths crossed.

Rebecca is a true example of who I want my girls to be around. She clearly has the heart of a servant and a kind, kind, spirit. And although our time “table momming” it up are over, she will forever be one of the reason I love where we live.

LHS Music Students Get Visit from Pro Music Makers

Students in Lassen High School’s music program were treated to a visit by two industry professionals last week and had a chance to learn about various facets of the music business from the pair’s unique perspective.

Lorenzo Butler and Kolby Van Kamp came as guests of LHS Music Instructor Ben Wade, and talked to his students about what it means, and what it takes, to succeed in the real world of professional music.

Lassen’s music program has grown to more than one hundred students in recent years, with an expanded slate of classes being offered including Symphonic Band, Drumline, Choir, Commercial Music and Advanced Professional Music. Butler and Van Kamp worked within each of these disciplines to help the students gain real-world skills.

Butler taught the Commercial Music students how to beat box, and how to put simple nursery rhymes to beats, making them sound cool.

Van Kamp worked on projection with the Choir, while Butler gave the Drumline a lesson in upbeat and syncopation.

Both experts worked with LHS’s Advanced Professional students and their recording projects, focusing on their mix-downs, genres and how to make a marketable song.

As a bonus Van Kamp, who’s degree from Kansas State University is in music composition, worked one-on-one with LHS student composer Jacob Mack, whose piece Slick Trick will be premiered at the Susanville Symphony’s upcoming Swing Band performance.

BLM Asking Public to Avoid

Driving on Muddy Roads

The Bureau of Land Management is asking the public to avoid driving on muddy roads. Recent winter storms have left a high potential for road damage and erosion on BLM-managed public lands in northeast California.

Winter weather and road conditions can change quickly, please gauge your winter safety awareness and recreate responsibly.

Staff in the Applegate Field Office have reported increasing damage to roads leading into firewood cutting areas. Road repairs will be costly and, in some cases, the damage is made worse by efforts to free vehicles mired in the mud.

“We are asking people to pay close attention to road conditions when venturing out into any public land areas during the winter and early spring months,” said Applegate Field Manager Craig Drake.

“Wood cutters should remember that rutting roads violates the terms in their permits. It’s best to plan activities for early morning while the ground is still frozen.”

Drake advises visitors to carefully plan their visits, Know Before You Go and realize conditions can change quickly. Bringing the 10 Essentials, packing a winter car kit, and checking road and weather conditions can make your visit a success.

The BLM urges public land visitors to call the nearest BLM office to check on conditions before venturing into the back country.

In northeast California, information on road conditions is available from the Applegate Field Office in Alturas, 530-233-4666; and the Eagle Lake Field Office in Susanville, 530-257-0456.

Uranium Depot at Doyle is Being Sought

Purchase, Milling Center is Proposed

March 15, 1955

A recommendation that the federal government builds a uranium purchasing and milling depot at Doyle has been introduced in the California state assembly.

Now in committee is a house resolution by Assemblywoman Pauline Davis (D-Portola) requesting Congress to provide the facility on the basis of recent discoveries of high-grade uranium in contiguous Nevada areas, the Lassen Advocate reports.

A depot in Doyle would be convenient to the Sierra Ordnance Depot centrally located in the exploration area and would provide a relatively safe and dispersed location from the national defense standpoint, the Davis proposal states.

If the assembly approves the resolution, requests for the depot construction will be made directly to President Eisenhower, Senate President Nixon, House Speaker Rayburn and each California senator and representative.

There are no uranium deposits in Nevada or California at present.
