"Type 2" Coordination - What is it? | Conference Schedule

Did You Know?

EPG Control Panel designs feature Type "2" Coordinated Protection. This means If a fault should occur, only the zone containing the fault will be effected. The rest of the system will continue to function. Type "2" protection, as a result of the use of current limiting fuses, assures that system components are not subjected to damaging fault currents, minimizing repair costs.

The use of current limiting fuses with high interrupting capacities often allows the use of smaller, lower amp-rated disconnects. This also allows the use of the smaller IEC motor starters. Both in turn result in lower initial costs as well as repair costs.

Type “2” Coordinated Protection can not be achieved with the use of circuit breakers. It can be achieved only with the use of a properly selected fuse that is UL Listed or CSA Certified.

Let's Compare Some Consequences

Following A Short Circuit:

Type "2" Protection

  • Open Fuses
  • No Permanently Welded Contacts
  • Still Functioning Overload Relays
  • Reduced Downtime/Operating Costs
  • Low Maintenance Cost
  • Faults Isolated, Easily Controlled
  • No Damage To Starter

Type "1" Protection

  • Damaged Starter
  • Welded Contacts
  • Burned Open Overload Relays
  • Productivity Drops
  • High Installation Cost
  • Potential System Blackouts
  • Potential Safety Issues

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard for motor starters and contactors, 947-4-1, defines two levels of component protection in the event of a short circuit. Definitions of the two levels of component protection are as follows:

Type “1” Coordination -

“under short circuit conditions, the contactor or starter shall cause no danger to person or installation and may not be suitable for further service without repair and replacement of parts.”

Type “2” Coordination -

“under short circuit conditions, the contactor or starter shall cause no danger to person or installation and shall be suitable for further use. The risk of contact welding is recognized, in which case the manufacturer shall indicate the measures to be taken in regards to the maintenance of the equipment.”
