FROM THE INTERIM DIRECTOR
I am pleased to share that Jen Gerber will begin as Library Director on July 25. Jen comes from the Oscar Grady Public Library in Saukville, Wisconsin, where she has led with boldness, empathy and great skill. We look forward to welcoming her to the community and seeing what she will accomplish here in Shorewood.

As interim director, I am helping us navigate the ongoing pandemic while also onboarding several new clerks and shelvers. We have cheered for our part-time team members who left for bigger things over the past year, knowing they each left indelible marks on the library and our hearts.

Part time work is valuable, even when staff only stay in a position for a short time. It allows people to gain experience, find meaning, and have flexibility while they pursue school, parenting or other passions. We are constantly evaluating the roles our part time staff members play, and striving to make these fulfilling and sustaining jobs. We will continue to work together to help our new team members learn the ropes and provide the outstanding customer service you expect.

WHAT WE'RE READING

Take a long canoe trip down the Maskwa River in northern Canada with Peter Heller’s adventure thriller, The River. Following two friends, Wynn and Jack, on their journey, Heller creates an evocative setting utilizing the natural world and descriptive scenery. Then, things pick up when Wynn and Jack spot a wildfire on the horizon and overhear an argument between a man and woman. Plus, there are encounters with some other questionable adventurers, too.

Slow moving yet intense, The River is a leisurely summer mystery for those looking for a little armchair travel.

Convenience Store Woman is a portrait of part-time konbini clerk Keiko. Items expire, managers turnover, but Keiko has been a staple for 18 years–just over half her life. For the first time, her few aspirations cease to concern her parents and protective sister when she finds there is convenience in keeping a disgraced former coworker as a mock-husband.
A thorough consideration of the rigid social and cultural mores of contemporary Japanese culture, Murata charms readers with her delightfully minimal and thoroughly human presentation. This is a quick read for any who are fans of neurodivergent perspectives and labor studies in literature.

As a big fan of Teen Wolf, I had been looking forward to reading Haynes' memoir for awhile. Gritty and visceral, Haynes writes with honesty about his childhood in small-town Kansas, coming to terms with his sexuality, and his struggle with addiction. He also shines a light on the lasting impacts of Hollywood's sexualization and homophobia, describing how he was asked to hide his sexuality when his acting career began to take off.

Miss Memory Lane is an emotional read, as Haynes candidly shares his experiences with sexual abuse and violence, but worth it for readers to follow his journey to healing.
