ADS for Rural America — SAM Talk with the National Advanced Driving Simulator at the University of Iowa
In our most recent SAM Talk we discussed the Automated Driving Systems (ADS) for Rural America project with the National Advanced Driving Simulator (NADS) at the University of Iowa. Through this project, data is produced to help train automated driving systems for the unique challenges of travel outside urban and interstate environments. Funded by a $7 million grant from the Department of Transportation, the project will also provide and measure the impact of ADS technology for populations with scarce access to public transportation.

All of this is done with a Ford Transit 350HD automated platform complete with a PACMod 3.0 drive by-wire system. The platform was developed in collaboration with Hexagon | AutonomouStuff.

"We conduct studies—several weeks of studies—on the connection between humans, road users and vehicles," said Omar Ahmad, project manager and NADS deputy director. "Studying that human/machine relationship is more important than ever in the context of automated driving systems because they rely upon the human driver being ultimately responsible for the safety of the vehicle."

Read our case study on the ADS for Rural America project to learn more about how the project also illustrates the benefits of next-generation mobility technology for populations underserved by public transportation options.

The SAM Talk is available now on demand and can be found here.
New product: NovAtel PIM222A
The PIM222A, recently launched by Hexagon | NovAtel, is a precise positioning product in their family of automotive GNSS solutions for Advanced Driver Assistant Systems (ADAS) and autonomy.

Created in collaboration with STMicroelectronics, the PIM222A module leverages SPAN GNSS+INS technology to deeply couple satellite and inertial measurements for enhanced tracking and continuous availability of position, velocity and attitude, even when satellite signals are interrupted.

Key benefits include:
  • Instant position and attitude — faster IMU calibration
  • Maintains accuracy longer into GNSS blackouts
  • Tracks and holds more satellites for sustained solutions
  • Higher resolution of application dynamics
  • Proven precision for automotive applications

Check out NovAtel's product page for a full listing of attributes, or download the product sheet.
Meet the team: John Hawkins
John Hawkins recently joined our team in Morton as an inventory associate. He came to the company with 13 years experience working with inventory of non-production material at a large manufacturer and has quickly put those skills to good use at Hexagon | Autonomoustuff.

"I joined AS in October of last year, so am still in the learning curve," he said. "It's interesting because no two days are alike since everything is tailored to the specific needs of each customer."

John is a great addition to our team and we are thrilled to continue to work with him!

Webinar on demand: Why is "good enough" positioning not ok in ag autonomy?
Classic GNSS positioning systems are great when there is an operator in the tractor cab, but what happens when there is no longer a driver taking control during position interruptions?

In this presentation, Hexagon | NovAtel’s Agriculture Autonomy Product Manager James Szabo explains the challenges and limits of traditional GNSS positioning and how we are overcoming them to support autonomous equipment in agriculture.
