Local Graduates Awarded 2022 CMS Chamber Scholarships
PHOTO: (L-R) Anjolina Fantaroni of Southbridge, Marguerite Rose MacKenzie of Charlton and Troy Phay of Sturbridge are the CMS Chamber Scholarships recipients. Congratulations and good luck to the Class of 2022!

Sturbridge, MA, June 27, 2022 - The Chamber of Central Mass South is excited to announce the winners of the Chamber Scholarships for 2022. This year, scholarships in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded to three very deserving, local students upon successful completion of their first semester of college with a 3.0 GPA or higher.

“Offering scholarships to local students is one of the best and most rewarding aspects of our operations. Every year, we are introduced to outstanding young people in our community, and this year is no exception,” said Chamber Executive Director Alexandra McNitt. “All our applicants are terrific students and engaged in their school extra-curriculars. The differentiator we look for in our candidates is their level of engagement and contributions to the community beyond school. These three students really stood out in that regard.”

This year’s $1000 scholarship recipients are Anjolina Fantaroni, Marguerite Rose MacKenzie, and Troy Phay.

Anjolina Fantaroni is a Class of 2022 Graduate of Quaboag Regional High School. Described by her Guidance Department Chairperson as the “total package of school spirit,” Anjolina or “Anjo” served as President of Student Council, Senior Class President and National Honor Society Treasurer. An outstanding student with an impressive transcript, Anjolina was involved in all aspects of school including student government, theater, sports and band. Beyond her academic prowess and abundant leadership skills, Anjolina also works part-time at Sturbridge Coffee Roasters in Southbridge where she is a motivated and valued employee who will be greatly missed when she departs for college to pursue a major in Broadcast Journalism at Elon University this fall.

Marguerite Rose MacKenzie is a Class of 2022 Graduate of Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School. A dedicated scholar, an entrepreneur and award-winning equestrian, Marguerite is very involved with the Massachusetts 4-H Club, in which she held several officer positions, including becoming President for several years and receiving the prestigious 4-H Sportsmanship Award. Maggie Rose has her own business, Mother Cluckers, selling farm fresh cage free eggs. A studious young woman and National Honor Society member with a dedication to the care of animals, Marguerite will be attending the University of Massachusetts, Amherst where she has been accepted in the College of Natural Sciences as a Pre-Vet major.

Troy Phay is a Class of 2022 graduate of Tantasqua Regional High School. Troy is an enthusiastic, diligent and focused student who participates to the highest degree academically and contributes to both his school and his community. Trustworthy, mature and driven, Troy’s wide array of interests include sales and love of media. He gives his time freely to volunteer for Little League and at the Senior Center. Balancing his school work and social life while employed for the last two years as a produce clerk and cashier at Micknuck’s Fresh Marketplace in Sturbridge, Troy is well-known for his outgoing and friendly attitude, his infectious and frequent laugh, and his intellectual integrity and work ethic. With a career goal of becoming an Advertising/Marketing Executive, Troy will attend Marist College to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Communication with a concentration in Advertising this fall.

The Chamber and its members are truly gratified to be able to contribute to the ongoing education and success of these exceptional local scholars and offer them heartfelt congratulations and best wishes as they embark on their journeys into higher education. The Chamber of Central Mass South typically offers $1000 scholarships to local students each year. Monies are allocated from the Chamber’s Charities and Scholarship Fund which is supported by the annual ‘Your Chance to Be a Millionaire’ lottery scratch tickets raffle, the Drivin’ it Ho(l)me for Health and Education Car Show held in partnership with the Harrington Hospital Auxiliary, the Chamber’s Annual Golf Classic, as well as individual contributions from Chamber Members. Country Bank – Made to Make a Difference

June 17, 2022 – Country Bank, a full-service financial institution serving Central and Western Massachusetts, is pleased to announce its new brand position of "Country Bank – Made to Make a Difference". The new tagline was revealed by Paul Scully, President and CEO of Country Bank at an all team meeting. Team members were given Difference Makers t-shirts and learned they would be building beds in partnership with the Mass Coalition for the Homeless and its Build a Bed Program. As a result, the Country Bank team made 55 beds to be distributed to children in Springfield and Worcester.
"Country Bank has been making a difference in the lives of its customers, communities, and team members since 1850. The excitement in the room and the opportunity for the entire Country Bank team to build these beds together was simply amazing to witness, the energy in the room was palpable," stated Scully. The new tagline was developed with its advertising agency through various focus groups and deep discussions about what team members, customers, non-profit organizations and non-customers believed to be true about Country Bank. "This tagline could not be more fitting for Country Bank; even more impactful is that our stakeholders developed it! We are very excited about how this positions the bank and know that when we say “Country Bank is Made to Make a Difference”, we truly believe that is exactly what we do, whether that is for our customers, both consumer and business, or for our communities," stated Shelley Regin, Senior Vice President of Country Bank.

During a recent press conference on June 1, 2022, Country Bank made an impactful difference by announcing that it was donating its former headquarters, valued at approximately 3 million dollars, to the Town of Ware for use as a new police department and other multipurpose space.

Second Chance’s Southbridge Veterinary Hospital Expands Hours and Services to Help More Pets
Nonprofit’s New Hospital Location Now Open Five Days a Week

SOUTHBRIDGE, MA (June 24, 2022) – Second Chance Animal Services has expanded hours and services at their Southbridge Community Veterinary Hospital to help more pets. The hospital is now open five days a week with early morning appointments available and has begun offering surgical and dental procedures.

Amanda Normandin, who is charged with overseeing all Second Chance veterinary hospitals, is thrilled that the nonprofit’s newest location is now open full-time and is now scheduling dentals and surgeries. Normandin says, “access to veterinary care can make a huge impact on a pet’s life.” Pets often hide their discomfort from pet owners. Veterinarians are trained to notice things a pet owner may miss and treating issues can add comfort and longevity to a pet’s life. “We have pet owners who bring their pet in for a recheck and comment that their pet is like a puppy or kitten again. For instance, dental procedures can be life changing.  Being able to eat well and get the nutrition they’ve been missing can restore a pet’s health.” The hospital plans to add low-cost spay and neuter surgery later this year.

Second Chance has additional Community Veterinary Hospitals located in North Brookfield, Springfield, and Worcester. Each location is open to all pet owners and offers subsidized rates for those that qualify. Pet owners who pay the full rate are helping provide the many programs that help over 40,000 pets a year.

Second Chance CEO Sheryl Blancato, who was born and raised in Southbridge, is excited to see her dream of bringing affordable full-service veterinary care to a very underserved area become a reality. According to Blancato, “pet owners from the Southbridge area have been asking for one of our hospitals to be located closer to them for years. For those facing transportation challenges, our other hospital locations are not easy to get. Now we are helping pets right in their community, providing access to the highest quality veterinary care to all.  Day after day, pet owners thank us for being here in Southbridge. We are heartened by the warm welcome from the community.”

Blancato says she is also very excited to see the educational partnership with Bay Path Regional Vocational High School actively begin educating the future of animal welfare. The hospital is home to the Bay Path Veterinary Education Center at Second Chance where Bay Path students in the veterinary science program will get real-life experience working alongside dedicated, trained staff, learning about working in the veterinary field. They will see what it’s like to be a receptionist, a vet assistant, a groomer and more, graduating with a certificate in veterinary assistance. Graduates can go directly into the workforce or pursue a veterinary technician or veterinarian degree.

The Southbridge hospital was made possible in part by PetSmart Charities and Arctic Fox who have long been partners in the mission of helping pets in need in the underserved communities in Massachusetts.

Pet owners can make an appointment for their pet by calling 774-318-1101. Reservations for the low-cost vaccine clinic held Wednesday mornings can be made online at www.secondchanceanimals.org/vaccine-clinics/.

Second Chance Announces July 15 Free Pet Vaccine Clinic at Palmer Town Building
Nonprofit to Distribute Donated Pet Beds at Special Clinic

EAST BROOKFIELD, MA (JUNE 29, 2022) – Second Chance Animal Services will be holding a free community pet vaccine clinic at the Palmer Town Building on Friday, July 15th. Advance registration is required for your pet to receive rabies and/or distemper vaccinations free of charge. Second Chance will also be distributing free pet beds.

Earlier this year, Second Chance was selected by Greater Good Charities, in partnership with BARK, Inc, to receive a large donation of dog beds to help enhance adoption efforts and temporary experiences for local pups. Approximately 500 beds will be distributed at the July 15th community clinic to help local pet owners care for their pets.

Chief Development Officer Lindsay Doray says Second Chance is grateful for the donation that has been providing a comfy bed for those welcoming new pets from the nonprofit’s adoption center in East Brookfield. Doray is thrilled that the bed donation can also help pets in the community. “Second Chance is committed to preventing pet homelessness. Our hospitals and many of our programs aim to keep pets in their homes and out of shelters by helping pet owners care for their pets. Distributing these beds at our low-cost community vaccine clinic will provide comfort to pets and educate pet owners about the resources available to them.” The beds will be distributed free of charge to pet owners who have registered their pet for the vaccine clinic and to visitors who stop by to learn more about Second Chance.

This local donation is part of BARK’S initial $10 million commitment in BARK products to enhance and expand initiatives by Greater Good Charities’ partner shelters and rescues to drive adoptions. Greater Good Charities is working with partner shelters nationwide to utilize thousands of BARK’s memory foam dog beds to help shelters enhance adoption drives and create dog adoption starter kits when individuals and families adopt new dogs. In addition, the nonprofit organization is offering BARK dog beds to pet-friendly domestic violence and homeless shelters to help families in crisis create a safe haven for their pup.

BARK’s partnership with Greater Good Charities is an expansion of the company’s ongoing work in giving back to dogs and their people. Since 2017, working with an internal network of over 1,000 partners in dogs and animal welfare across the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico, BARK has donated around $1 million annually in goods, services, and direct funding in order to help dogs stay in homes. Greater Good Charities, works to amplify the good in the world, and has provided more than $400 million in impact, including cash grants, in-kind supplies, and programmatic support, to over 5,000 charitable partners in 121 countries since 2007.

The July 15th vaccine clinic and bed distribution will take place at the Palmer Town Building, 4417 Main Street. Bed distribution will be from 9 AM to 1 PM while supplies last and vaccines will be scheduled from 10 AM to 1 PM. Both are open to all pet owners in the region. To register for the vaccine clinic, visit www.secondchanceanimals.org/palmer/
