"Let's Talk Caregiving"
Episode 65: Using Gentle Movement in Caregiving to Build Strength and Balance
In this month's episode, Roberto and Martha chat with Jennie, a yoga instructor who teaches gentle and chair yoga and movement to seniors. She also works one-on-one with caregivers, teaching them how to engage with their loved ones through yoga, breathing techniques, and short guided meditations. Listen to their discussion about how to use gentle movement in caregiving, how these practices may fit into a self-care routine, and the benefits of practical, easy movements.

Finally, several community organizations supporting seniors and their loved ones were present to connect with attendees and link them to vital programs and services.

CareCloud: Advice from SCRC's Team of Experts | |
What are some ways that caregivers can honor their care receiver’s life and achievements? How can caregivers respond empathetically when their care receiver shares or asks questions about their past?
Honoring a care receiver’s life and achievements is essential for their emotional well-being. Responding to your loved one’s stories or questions with empathy and curiosity can create a beautiful, enduring bond between the two of you throughout your caregiving journey. Here are some ways caregivers can show appreciation for their aging family member’s past:
-
Celebrate Achievements: Organize a family gathering or dinner to acknowledge their significant milestones. You can also create a memory book to commemorate their achievements and enlist the help of your care receiver to select photos and decorate.
-
Incorporate Their Interests: Include their favorite hobbies and interests in their daily routine to keep them engaged and happy: for example, keep basic craft supplies in stock for a former artist, or find simple recipes to collaborate on for someone who loved cooking.
-
Encourage Storytelling: Ask open-ended questions to help them share their experiences, which can bring joy and remind them of their valued moments. Return the favor: tell your loved one stories about your own life that they might relate to, especially ones that involve a positive memory with the care receiver.
Southern Caregiver Resource Center offers valuable resources on honoring your care receiver’s life while establishing a sense of trust and connection. Our Caregiving Corner videos on “Dementia Activities”, parts 1 and 2, provide valuable advice on selecting appropriate enrichment activities for your care receiver based on their treasured hobbies and experiences – all in under 3 minutes per video! For a specific recommendation, watch our pre-recorded presentation, Reminiscence Gardening for Caregivers.
