Anticipation is building for the kick-off session of The Allowance List: A Curatorial Conversation Series. This members-only event will feature Conservancy Board member Charles B. Anderson, the son of Commodore John W. Anderson. In this evening webinar, Charles will share his personal recollections on his father’s storied career at the helm of the SS United States through rarely-seen photos and fascinating stories.

SHIPWAY NUMBER 10: A NEW MONTHLY GIVING PROGRAM TO SUPPORT THE CONSERVANCY

Monthly Giving Helps Safeguard America's Flagship, Build Our Curatorial Collection, and Plan our Future Museum

The dream of the SS United States emerged in steel and aluminum at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company's Shipway Number 10. From the laying of her keel on February 8, 1950 (as depicted in this drawing from Crossing on Time: Steam Engines, Fast Ships, and a Journey to the New World by David Macaulay) the ship has always embodied technological and artistic achievement and has served as a soaring monument to the nation's can-do spirit.

Shipway Number 10 is a community of Conservancy members who support us throughout the year through automatic, recurring donations of a specific amount each month.

This continuity and generosity is essential to our ongoing efforts to keep the SS United States safely floating, our curatorial collections growing, and our museum planning moving forward. As with the placement of the ship's keel in her original graving dock, our Shipway Number 10 supporters provide foundational support as we work to ensure that the SS United States inspires and endures for future generations.

RECALLING THE SS UNITED STATES' SEA TRIALS,

SEVENTY-TWO YEARS LATER

On May 14, 1952 the SS United States began the first set of her builder's sea trials. During these trails she traveled in excess of 38 knots — over 44 miles per hour, an unprecedented speed record for an ocean liner that remains unbroken to this day.

Recently, the SS United States Conservancy's Hampton Roads chapter acquired a copy of a booklet describing the ship's Builder's Trials from May 14-16, 1952.  (This booklet and other historic documentation from the ship's trials and launch are also held in the Conservancy's permanent collection.) The Hampton Roads copy was reportedly given to one of the tugboat captains that escorted the SS United States out of Newport News.

SUPPORTER SPOTLIGHT: CHARLIE FLOWE

Charlie Flowe, teacher/journalist, moved to Philadelphia to study at Drexel University in 1996, the same year the SS United States also arrived in Philadelphia. Born and raised in Newport News, VA, the birthplace of the Big U, Charlie grew up very familiar with Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. His fraternal grandfather worked at the shipyard and earned the bragging rights as one of the painters of the SS United States’ stunning red, white and blue funnels.

Charlie’s mother was a “military brat” who relocated in Germany for her high school years. In 1965, upon graduation, Charlie’s maternal grandfather, a US Air Force veteran who served during World War II, was transferred back to the U.S. Like so many other military families posted in Europe, Charlie’s mom traveled back home aboard the SS United States.
