Michael Cornelis | President Board of Trustee

Our big February membership drive was a huge success. But we still have a long way to go. Did you know that we have over 4,000 email addresses that receive our weekly N4N email news? However, we have less than 450 GVS members. No where to go but up!

If you are a member of the German Village Garten Club, Friends of Schiller, Village Connections, Friends of Frank Fetch Park, Prost! Fun Bunch, Village Singers, Huntington Garden's Dead Headers, German Village Market, or any such related GV special interest group – good for you! But we still need you to be a member of the German Village Society. Please consider increasing your membership level to at least a Builders level. Your support is critical to help us carry on our mission.

Happy March everyone!

Think You Know a Potential Trustee?

Tim Morbitzer | Board of Trustees

Each year, the Organizational Development Committee is tasked with providing a slate of candidates for open board seats for the August election. We rely on members for quality input!

Whether it is your neighbors, friends, or fellow committee members, please give some serious thought to who you feel could make a great board member, either now or possibly in the future. Maybe you know someone who is driven and interested in becoming more involved but hasn’t really done much with the Society yet. That’s fine, too. Please let us know and we can help steer that person to a committee to build our pipeline of future candidates.

Here’s what we’re looking for:

1. Must be a German Village Society member (that’s the easy part!).

2. A passion for our mission.

3. Experience with the organization in the form of volunteerism, event involvement, or committee activity.

4. Ideally, the candidate brings a diversity of backgrounds, thoughts, or experiences to the board.

We’re looking for people who are willing to engage with the organization and make the commitment to help sustain the Society, especially during our current pandemic situation.

Please submit names to me at morbitzer1@gmail.com by March 15.

Caretakers of a Legacy Call for Nominations

The Caretakers of a Legacy is an awards program that is jointly presented by the German Village Society and the German Village Commission. This program honors people, projects, and organizations that contribute to the preservation and enhancement of the historic fabric of German Village.

The Caretakers President’s Award is chosen by the German Village Society and is awarded to a property owner, an individual, an organization, or a business entity in recognition of an outstanding contribution to the historic, architectural, or aesthetic character of German Village and to the community’s way of life. The Board of Trustees is asking for nominations for this award. Please submit your nomination to Marcus Watson by March 31, 2023.

Joan F. Wobst Passing

We learned with great sadness that the family of Joan F. Wobst announced her passing on February 26, 2023, at her home on Jupiter Island, Florida with her family by her side. She was 88. A renowned painter and sculptor, Joan was inspired to create artworks that reflected history and the natural world. We here in German Village are proud to have one of her best-known works – The Umbrella Girl Fountain in Schiller Park. Joan created and donated this piece to the Friends of Schiller Park in 1996 – it instantly became an iconic image, appearing in AP wire stories across the country, Columbus promotional materials, and paintings by a host of other artists.

ProMusica’s winds are featured in Strauss’ Serenade for Winds and the strings take center with Tausky’s reflective and moving Coventry. Principal bassoon Ellen Connors performs Villa Lobos’ beautiful and evocative Ciranda Das Sete Notas, and Mozart’s Prague Symphony offers an exciting conclusion to the program.
