Summertime = A Focus on Water Safety

As we encounter the VERY high temperatures of July, it becomes increasingly important to prioritize summer water safety. Whether it's lounging by the pool or enjoying the waves at the beach, there are several key guidelines to keep in mind for a fun and safe experience. It is essential to maintain constant supervision of children around water, follow correct swimming practices, and remain alert to any potential risks. By being proactive and well-informed, we can collectively savor a secure and rejuvenating summer season. Check out the graphic above from the American Red Cross or read more here.

Live Update Mobile Van Schedule

July is UV Safety Awareness Month, a crucial time to focus on protecting our skin and eyes from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Here are some essential tips:

  1. Wear Sunscreen: Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily and reapply every two hours.
  2. Use Protective Clothing: Wear long sleeves, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses.
  3. Seek Shade: Stay in the shade, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when UV rays are strongest.
  4. Avoid Tanning Beds: Tanning beds increase skin cancer risk. Use self-tanning products instead.
  5. Check the UV Index: Be aware of the UV index to understand daily exposure risks.
  6. Protect Children: Ensure kids wear sunscreen and protective clothing and play in the shade.
  7. Mind Reflected UV Rays: Be cautious around water, sand, and snow, which reflect UV rays.

Stay safe, enjoy the summer, and share these tips to raise UV safety awareness!

National Health Center Week (August 4-10) is an annual celebration recognizing the vital role health centers like WCHC play in providing quality healthcare to millions of Americans. The week highlights the importance of community health centers in delivering accessible, affordable, and comprehensive care.

The Impact of Health Centers

Community health centers serve as a lifeline for underserved populations, offering services such as:

  • Primary Care: Providing routine check-ups, immunizations, and management of chronic conditions.
  • Preventive Services: Offering screenings, health education, and preventive care to maintain overall well-being.
  • Behavioral Health: Integrating mental health services, including counseling and substance use treatment.
  • Dental Care: Ensuring access to essential dental services for both children and adults.
  • Support Services: Assisting with social services, including housing support, nutrition programs, and transportation.

Join us in celebrating National Health Center Week by recognizing the critical work of community health centers. Their services ensure that everyone has access to the healthcare they need, fostering healthier and stronger communities.

WCHC Receives Title X Service Grant

We are excited to announce that West Cecil Health Center has been awarded a Title X grant from the Office of Population Affairs (OPA), which is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). This significant funding will enable us to enhance our healthcare services, particularly in the areas of family planning and reproductive health. Family planning services include contraceptive counseling, birth control options, and education on spacing and timing pregnancies. Reproductive health encompasses a wide range of services such as screenings for sexually transmitted infections, cancer prevention, prenatal care, and support for healthy pregnancies. With this grant, we can expand our outreach, improve our facilities, and provide even more comprehensive care to our community. Thank you for your continued support as we strive to make a positive impact on the lives of those we serve.

Mental Health Matters

Helping to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health.

Minority Mental Health Month, recognized every July since 2008, serves as a poignant reminder of the distinct hurdles faced by marginalized communities in accessing mental health care and support. It highlights disparities in mental health treatment, emphasizing the necessity for culturally competent services that honor and embrace diverse backgrounds. This observance not only raises awareness but also strives to break the stigma surrounding mental health issues within minority groups, encouraging open dialogue and seeking help when needed. It underscores the intersecting nature of mental health, acknowledging how factors such as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic status, and cultural background can impact one's mental well-being and access to care.

By promoting inclusivity and understanding, Minority Mental Health Month aims to cultivate a more just and supportive environment where all individuals can receive the care and resources they require to lead healthy lives. It is a time to amplify voices, advocate for systemic change, and ensure that mental health services are accessible, effective, and respectful of the diversity within our communities.

WCHC Behavioral Health is currently accepting new patients for both in-person and telehealth medication management. We are currently on a waitlist for therapy services. If you, or someone you know, are in need of care, please call the office today at 410-378-9696 to schedule.
